- Discovery alert! Meet Palatobaena knellerorum, a new species of fossil turtle found by DMNS volunteer Sharon Milito at Corral Bluffs in 2019. Palatobaena was recently described in a paper in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. #FossilFriday Illustration by @AndreyAtuchin.
- A bizarre 66-million-old mammal was discovered in Madagascar by a team of researchers led by Dr. David Krause, senior curator of vertebrate paleontology at DMNS. The discovery, called Adalatherium, was announced today in the journal Nature. bit.ly/3aUcbHj
- 🚨 Discovery alert! 🚨 The first new skull discovered in nearly a century from a rare species of the iconic, tube-crested dinosaur Parasaurolophus was announced today in the journal PeerJ. Learn more: bit.ly/2Y9qHH0
- Last week, we did something that we haven't done in a long, long time… deinstalled the Alma King from exhibit. This specimen, perhaps the world’s best rhodochrosite crystal, is getting a new portable mount built so that we can display it offsite when needed. #MineralMonday
- Happy #FossilFriday! This Smilodectes gracilis skull, found in Sweetwater County, Wyoming, was the 10,000th specimen added to the vertebrate paleontology collection. Smilodectes gracilis was an early primate from the Eocene Epoch.
- This is the ventral (bottom) surface of the only Gargoyleosaurus skull ever collected from the Jurassic Morrison Formation of Wyoming. It was described by DMNS scientists in 1998. #FossilFriday
- Happy #NewYear and 1st #fossilfriday of #2021! Museum Scientists continue to work on the treasure trove of fossils uncovered from just after the extinction of the dinosaurs. Many of these fossils belong to new species and are in the process of being described and named.
