I suspect that it’s true of every field. The pre-WW2 model in which a few research universities had the very best people, and most institutions saw their mission as teaching, not research, was more efficient and more effective.
One more thing: I’ve never heard any of those viral claims from the original study. Answering would be basically random. So, I don’t trust the results at all.
I’ve been a professor for 44 years, and still love what I do. Yes, there’s too much grading, administrative stuff, etc., and too little recognition. But the freedom to think about what interests me, surrounded by brilliant colleagues and students, is amazing.
