The Tartan Army heading off to the World Cup made me think of this piece I once wrote about all those who travelled to watch the Lisbon Lions so I uploaded it to Substack. I loved writing it. Different fans, same dreams, same spirit of adventure.

Thinking about that amazing Megan Rapinoe shot and how women are taught from the earliest age to take up as little space as possible; to make ourselves invisible, so we feel both uneasy and liberated looking at it.

There are such "burn the witch" vibes from this photograph. An age-old story of men's power and men's fear. It's bleak as hell, but at the same time: hold on to that look of defiance.

I no longer care about "lost lessons" or even "lost learning": if they get through this with their spirits more or less intact that will be more than enough for me.

So many times I think freelancing is too hard. Then I remember it means I will never again have to write about a royal baby and it's all worthwhile.

The Noel Clarke story is a reminder that when people say a predator was "hiding in plain sight" what they really mean is "blind eyes were turned". And that turning a blind eye is a kind of complicity.

For anyone in any doubt about the misogyny in this country, just look at that Sun front page. Absolute woman-hating garbage. Poisonous and completely unacceptable.

This is what gets missed - the toll of the last year on the original complainers and the chilling effect on other women.
