With Crayola products sold in more than 80 countries and packaged in 12 different languages, Crayola is very much a global company. The word “negro” appears along with the words “black” and “noir” because it is the literal Spanish translation of the word black.

As a global company, Crayola offers multiple languages on some products and packages to help children learn different languages. Although it may cause some confusion, negro (pronounced nay-gro) is the appropriate word a Spanish-speaking person would use for the color black.

At Crayola, we focus on providing the tools to allow kids express their creativity. Since Crayola does not manufacture Elmer's Glue, we are unable to provide any insight on their packaging. It would be best to share your concerns directly with the makers of Elmer's Glue.☺

On October 23, 1903 the first box of Crayola Crayons were sold! The look of our 8-count box has changed through the years but the colors inside have remained the same and continue to inspire creatively alive kids as they explore, discover, play, pretend, and dream!

Thanks for sharing your concerns! The word negro appears along with the words black and noir because it is the literal Spanish translation of the word black, just as noir is the word for black in French.
