🦣 🤯 🦣 🤯 🦣 Video of woolly mammoth leg discovered in the Siberian permafrost! Researchers from #CpgSthlm and SciLifeLab have now, for the first time ever, identified signatures of gene activity in frozen mammoth remains! cell.com/cell/fulltext/…

We now have some news on the 18,000 year old #wolf or #dog puppy. Genome analyses shows it's a male. So we asked our Russian colleagues to name it... Thus, the name of the puppy is Dogor! Dogor is a Yakutian word for "friend", which seems very suitable.

Woolly mammoths survived on Wrangel Island until 2000 BC! But why did they go extinct? Were they doomed once stuck on the island? We went to Siberia, collected bones & teeth, and sequenced 21 complete genomes. Here is what we found (🧵) Paper in Cell: cell.com/cell/fulltext/…

@Nibbledtodeath is working on this specimen together with @pontus_skoglund. It's 18 kyrs old! So far, we have sequenced it's genome to 2X coverage. But we still can't say if it's a #wolf or a #dog. Maybe it's the common ancestor? More sequencing needed! (Photo: S Fedorov)

This mammoth tooth is 1.2 million years old. We have recovered DNA from it. This is the oldest DNA ever sequenced. The results are published today in Nature: nature.com/articles/s4158… [THREAD] ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Here is a short video of Spartak the Cave Lion #Kitten, which was #frozen for 28,000 years before being recovered from the permafrost. Spartak is arguably the best preserved Ice Age animal ever found, and is now featured in our paper published today: nature.com/articles/s4159…

Follow this thread for an almost unbelievable story, hiding in the SI of this paper: cell.com/current-biolog… Ten years ago, a roughly 14,000 year old frozen #dog or #wolf #puppy was found in Russia. It's been named Tumat. Subsequently, an autopsy of Tumat was conducted (1/n).

Packing up most of our ancient DNA protective equipment (Tyvek suits, gloves, face masks, ethanol) for delivery to the local hospital. #COVID19 feels a bit more important than Mammoths and Anatolian farmers. #Coronasverige

What genes make a #woollymammoth? 🦣🧬 We have analyzed the genomes of 23 woolly mammoths and compared them to 28 Asian and African savannah #elephants to discover the unique gene variants involved in the woolly mammoth's iconic looks. OA paper cell.com/current-biolog… 🧵1/n

This CAVE LION cub is arguably the best preserved #iceage animal ever found! It's name is Sparta. In a paper published today with colleagues from 🇷🇺 🇯🇵 & 🇫🇷, we use DNA & 14C to show that it's a female cub that died c 28,000 years ago. Read more here: mdpi.com/2571-550X/4/3/…

Woolly rhinoceros genome sequenced! A team led from #CpgSthlm show that human arrival (30 kya) in NE Siberia did not lead to decline in woolly rhino numbers, suggesting climate warming at 14 kya as more likely cause of extinction. OA Paper: cell.com/current-biolog… 📷 S Fedorov

Scientists from #CpgSthlm & @FriedlanderLab have for the first time recovered RNA from an extinct species! From ∼130 yr old dry tissue! A game-changer for studies on gene expression in extinct species & RNA virus evolution (SARS, ebola, influensa, etc)? genome.cshlp.org/content/early/…

This bird is c. 46,000 years old! It was found in Siberian permafrost. Genomic anlayses show it's a female horned lark (Eremophila alpestris), and that it belonged to a population that likely was ancestral to the flava and brandti subspecies. Paper: nature.com/articles/s4200…
