I once heard @tressiemcphd say that the best scholars are good storytellers. All of my favorite sociologists were ones who wrote the South. I wanted to follow in that tradition & use storytelling to bear witness on NC to use words honestly, beautifully .

When I graduated high school my mama went to a rent-to-own store and got a computer so I could go to college with a laptop. Over the course of her payments she ended up paying $2400 for a $700 laptop. Being poor is expensive & college isn’t the equalizer we think it is.

Just realized my mom doesn’t know what my PhD is in, she just tells people I’m a doctor. I’m over here writing about hip-hop and she got the family thinking I’m doing surgeries 😂😂😂

I grew up in section 8 housing filled with love. went to undergrad using Pell Grants. in grad school my mama use to mail me her food stamp card. everything that made it possible for me to get a PhD has been cut. i'm sad for the the little black kids having their future stolen.

I didn’t realize how poor I was until I got a good job. Education and a middle class salary can not undo the long term economic and emotional damage of living most of your life in poverty.

JD Vance saying don't trust PhDs, I can 100% tell you that as a black person with a PhD, white folks think they know more about my research than me. Its almost as if they think they are naturally smarter than others, which is.....

I respect people who can save money by eating at home. If I have a bad day at work, I’m picking up food on the way home. If I have a good day at work, I’m picking up food to celebrate. If I make my own lunch, I’m picking up food for dinner since I already saved money on lunch.

Y’all be praising black excellence but I support black aight-ness. We don’t need to be excellent to be loved, celebrated, and valued. Being aight is good enough.

Having long stretches off from work doesn’t rejuvenate me & make me feel ready to go back. It just shows my body how unhealthy it is to work the amount of hours we do.

While getting my PhD a lot of the people I passed on campus that looked like me were groundskeepers, housekeepers, & other service staff. The generous statements they gave me on my good & bad days lifted my spirits in ways they will never know. They were part of my village.

“I shop like my mama, I buy my coats in the summertime” I love black folks from the south 😂
This is the start of Keon Coleman's first press conference as a member of the Buffalo Bills. Covering this man is going to be a real treat. #BillsMafia @WKBW

As a person with a PhD I’m often asked ‘what do their parents do?’Whenever I answer with clean white folks homes & work in a factory, I always notice their pause & I’m reminded that folks who write & teach about poor folk have little experience with them.
