The year is 2028. You're in the theater watching Shin Godzilla's Counterattack. Godzilla has evolved into a continent sized asteroid and is being propelled towards earth.
In February 2016, Hideaki Anno proposed a sequel to Shin Godzilla, titled "Shin Godzilla's Counterattack". He wanted it to be a cheap, late Showa-style, Godzilla movie for fans who'd dislike Shin. But Toho rejected it immediately and Anno felt like he wasted his time prepping it.
In 3.33, Shinji waits for Kaworu to play piano with him by sitting and hugging his knees. In 3.0+1.0, he assumes this same position in the NERV ruins, revealing he was waiting for Kaworu to come save him. This shot later in the film shows Shinji realizing this.
