The master narrative: In his 1st year of high school, Colby's Dad died of cancer. Yesterday, in his final high school race & on the day before Father's Day, Colby led off the greatest 4*8 in Illinois history. "I felt my dad out there...and that was my Father's Day gift to him."

This began as a letter to my team. Upon reflection, I decided I wanted to share an excerpted version with the public, and especially with any athlete whose season was cut short. Please consider reading: coachlawrencehcxc.com/2020/03/14/whe…

Some day, my kids will say to their kids, ‘when I was little, my parents took us to Oregon. And our team won the National Championship!’ Aden, Michael, Grant, Dan-in time you’ll appreciate the magnitude of this achievement. Thank you for this moment! @ILXCTF @MileSplitIL @runHCXC

After many weeks of reflection, writing, & revision, I am ready to publish this tribute to my daughter Beatrix, who died October 19 at 13 months of age. I would consider it an honor if you would take some time to read about her short but oh so sweet life: coachlawrencehcxc.com/2018/12/06/bea…

Colby Revord walked off the track and went to give his medal to Mehlum Anjarwala, the athlete whose place he took in the 4*400 finals, only to find that Dan Watcke had already given his to Mehlum. What can you say? It’s nice to be great, but it’s greater to be nice.

We fought the good fight, but officials won't reinstate us. What's the lesson here? It is this: such moments reveal character. How did we respond? Skora grabbed the baton immediately and ran his ass off. Watcke ran 47.7 in a desperate, valiant effort to get his team to finals.

I was in high school when the Pre movies came out. The moral was clear: we admire him not for winning but for absolutely going for it. Here we are in his state and @runhcxc freaking went for it today - 2nd at the mile! The guys ran with courage & heart and finished 8th in the US!
