I don’t care if you’ve done the procedure a million times. Always check your equipment. Especially if you just woke up.

I finished residency yesterday morning at 6 am. I’ve learned so much in this place over the last 3 years, and I’ve worked with some truly incredible people. I’m alone in this picture but countless friends and mentors got me to this point. Happy First of July to all who celebrate.

Last week I worked my final shift as a paramedic. I am so grateful for the my career in #EMS. On the left in 2010, I’m an EMT about to graduate college, on the right it’s 2020, I’m a paramedic who’s just graduated medical school. That’s a decade of coffee and cargo pants.

Fun fact: Power Point slides with yellow font on blue background were first used by Dr. William Osler in 1889. Med school professors continue to use this template to this day in homage to him.

EMT ✅ Paramedic ✅ EM Resident ✅ EMS fellow ✅ 17 years in, excited for what comes next and so grateful for everyone who’s helped me along the way.

I shadowed a hospital chaplain today. I asked him how he feels when family are upset that a patient is at the end of life and the doctors are “sending in the priest.” He said, “Sometimes I’m just here for people to be mad at, and that’s okay.”

Today I pulled a paramedic student in to watch a PEG tube in the MICU. He got to see airway anatomy during the endoscopy and learn about procedural sedation. Just because something is outside someone’s scope doesn’t mean there’s nothing for them to learn.

About to start my first ED shift as a med student at the same ED where I worked my first New York City 911 shift eight years ago. It’s a long road from EMT to MD, just keep putting one foot in front of the other. #MedicToDoc

I was that guy on the tour. I loved the place so much I had someone take a picture of me on the helipad. I’m going to train to be an EM physician at @unm_emed!!!!!! #MatchDay2020

Long shift, but my attending took this cool picture of me, full Hollywood waiting on a helicopter this morning.

*Unscientific experiment* Lately I keep the AC on with all vents pointed at the floor and the exhaust fan running 24/7. The best defense against aerosols/droplets is appropriate PPE & a surgical mask on the pt, but this may help make the 🚑 a bit safer. #EMS #FOAMed #COVID19

They told me being a doctor would be hard, but no one told me my default search engine would be Bing.

Something I didn’t realize I’d miss about being a paramedic: Carrying a bag of medications you can give to patients when they need them. No nursing orders, no Pyxis, just reach in the bag, give the med. Do any docs in the hospital besides anesthesia know that luxury?
