If ByteDance were a normal market actor, they would have taken the tens of billions of dollars people are willing to offer them. But they are not a normal market actor. TikTok is a weapon in the hands of Xi Jinping, and only changing the ownership structure will fix that.

TikTok essentially argued today that a qualified divestment is impossible because the source code and engineering remain in China. That pretty much proves the point: as long as TikTok and ByteDance are beholden to the CCP, the national security threat is too big to ignore.

The title of President implies democratic legitimacy. Xi Jinping has none. Labels matter, and we should always emphasize that Xi Jinping's power derives from his role as General Secretary of the CCP, not from the consent of the Chinese people.

Yesterday I met with President Trump to discuss a term limits bill that I introduced early last year. If we’re going to end the careerism that’s infecting Washington, DC then implementing term limits and getting back to the citizen legislator model is a no-brainer.
