New headteacher at my husband's school has axed Media Studies A-level, one of the most popular subjects. I heard @IanDunt comment recently that all kids should study it so they can bring a critical faculty to what is reported and by whom. I couldn't agree more

Remembering my brother Richard who died in 1991 on his birthday today. I'm still never an only child

A bedspread of non-fiction I recommend you read in the first quarter of 2022

My brother Richard - my only sibling who died in 1991 - would have been 55 today. A sense of loss has long been part of who I am but I have happy, sandy memories too 🤍

Woman comes up to me in Waitrose: "You look like you'll know. What kind of pastry do I need to make a quiche?". And there was me thinking I exuded an entirely different kind of vibe 😕

I've long said that we need a @WomensPrize for Non-Fiction
Non-fiction as a category is so dominated by men (esp in popular science). I recently did an informal survey in bookshops up in Merseyside/NW & almost 100% of books displayed & on tables were from men. This ofc has an effect on who is bought & read & thereby status bias.

People often comment on the crochet blanket I photograph my books on, so here's a pic of my reading sofa & blanket collection (we have a cold house!). All from charity shops when they were still cheap. As were the cushions, apart from the middle one, made for me by my BF

It's always time to read more non-fiction & poetry so here's my @thebookseller choice of books publishing in March

I'm Caroline, I'm menopausal & I run slower than I used to. But I create stuff better. Today, with the help of @DrNighatArif, @thebookseller launches its first ever survey of attitudes to & experiences of the menopause years in the book trade. Please RT and complete

This is excellent, of course; but why do we always think fiction when we think debut? I'd love to see an equivalent annual feature shouting about outstanding first non-fiction books. I know they exist!

Daughter reports by text on first online English lecture at uni. Apparently when asked why they wanted to study English, one student pipes up: "So I can be like Connell in 'Normal People'".

I'm overjoyed to announce that my book, "Listen With Father" has launched @unbounders. It's a memoir of my Dad, evoked through the classical music he cherished. More here unbound.com/books/listen-w…
