The surface of Lake Mead, the country's largest reservoir, is now at 1,045 feet above sea level. Below about 895 feet, water would no longer pass through Hoover Dam. "We are 150 feet from 25 million Americans losing access to the Colorado River."

Last year, I received a tip that a Saudi company was leasing thousands of acres of state-owned land in western Arizona at what appeared to be a discounted rate, while pumping unlimited amounts of water to irrigate alfalfa for cattle.🧵@robodellaz

Today California water regulators issued a draft order telling Nestlé to halt “unauthorized” water diversions because their investigation found the company doesn’t have valid rights to take much of the water it’s been piping out of the national forest.

Just weeks after the removal of dams restored a free-flowing Klamath River, salmon have made their way upstream to begin spawning and have been spotted in Oregon for the first time in more than a century.

"Our salmon have returned home." Indigenous activists spent decades campaigning for dams to be removed on the Klamath River. Now they are celebrating as salmon are heading upstream to spawn. Some fish have made it all the way to creeks in Oregon.

Crews have nearly finished dismantling the last of four dams on the Klamath River. In mid-August, I saw excavators carving away at remnants of two dams — Iron Gate and Copco No. 1. Soon workers will clear channels, reestablishing a free-flowing stretch of the river.
