I'm going to put some of my favorite little threads in this thread, so that someone might read them. If there is such a thing as a Rubus Blog, this is it:
In 8 years at my job, I've gone from having a team that threw a baby shower for me when our first baby was due
to having a team that no longer shares personal updates about what we did over the weekend.
Most of it is the post-2020 ramp up in remote work: there is something different about being in the same place. But even aside from that biggest factor, there are only so many org changes and layoffs before you just stop expecting any permanence in your network.
College
- removes a young person from whatever has made his life stable
- imposes costs that he is unable to really conceptualize
- surrounds him primarily with similarly unmoored & naive peers
- and tells him that it's adulthood
Surely this can't have bad consequences.
