    My mother was a Brazilian immigrant from the city of Manaus in the Amazon. Like many of her generation she considered Pele a hero - not just because of his soccer skills but for being a humanitarian. I met Pele in the early 80s. My mom was right: pure kindness. Adeus, senhor. RIP

    I'm told #Yankees have a seven-year, $245 million offer on the table for Gerrit Cole. Would be a record-setting contract for a pitcher, surpassing Greinke’s $34.4 million AAV. Question is whether #Dodgers or #Angels will go to 8-9 or even 10 years.

    #Mets hierarchy impressed with Max Scherzer’s willingness to defer to Jacob deGrom. First day in camp today, Scherzer told coaches , “I”m here to help Jake. He should get the ball whenever he wants. He comes before me.”

    According to a family member, Anthony Rizzo is quite eager to return to #Yankees in 2022. That’s an important first step, assuming NYY want him back. Have to assume they do.

    One MLB executive says he “not shocked” at how poorly #Astros have handled current crisis. Jim Crane was warned about coming storm, urged to gather his players to prepare for industry reaction, media questions. Crane passed on the idea. Said, “it’ll blow over by spring training."

    My tribute to David Wright: last summer I mentioned a friend of mine had been diagnosed with spinal stenosis and was feeling pretty down about it. DW asked for his email and wrote a lengthy note, offering advice and encouragement. Never met a ballplayer who would do that #Mets

    Just spent 20 minutes talking pitching with Gerrit Cole. I have spent a lifetime on the mound (high school, college, semi-pro) but our conversation was like a kindergartner meeting a physics professor #Yankees

    #Mets are moving closer to George Springer and/or Trevor Bauer. Ultimate target is TBD. I’m told @StevenACohen2 is leaning towards Springer; Alderson would like to sign Bauer. Either one would be a huge upgrade in Flushing.
