Shotspotter doesn't work. It fails to make our communities safer, at the expense of increased surveillance & policing of Black and Latine neighborhoods and $54M dollars. We spoke with @HellGateNY about our new report analyzing 9 years of NYPD data:

BREAKING: We’re suing ICE. Detained immigrants are being forced to challenge their detention and deportation via a video screen. ICE refuses to bring them to court to fight for their liberty. This is a denial of due process and equal justice.

#BREAKING: Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Craig Walker granted our motion to have Jazmine Headley released on her own recognizance. #JusticeforJazmine!!

#Heatwave on Rikers: Most are without AC. DOC not providing summer clothes as required. Some only have 1 set of clothes, longjohns we sent in winter. A client says an officer retaliated against people for taking off their shirts by turning off a fan. @CorrectionNYC must fix this.

It's COLD on Rikers. We've created an Amazon Wishlist of items to help our detained clients get through the winter. With no heat, paper-thin uniforms, and a thin blanket, our clients need warm socks, thermals, and shirts to stay warm. Click here to give: amazon.com/gp/registry/wi…

STATEMENT ON POLICE BRUTALITY IN BROOKLYN SUBWAY: “Officer Latham’s involvement in this incident is particularly troubling, as she was one of the officers who ripped the 1-year-old child from the arms of Jazmine Headley, another client of ours, at an HRA office last year.”

Jazmine Headley has been released from Rikers and our Jail Services Social Worker is driving her home to her family. We ask that everyone please respect her privacy. Thank you all for your support and advocacy! #JusticeforJazmine

#BREAKING: Charges against Jazmine Headley relating to the incident at an HRA office last week have been DISMISSED and the order of protection is gone. We are now filing a motion to get her released. #JusticeforJazmine

This is HUGE. ICE’s illegal practice of targeting and arresting people in & around courthouses has long jeopardized safety & had a chilling effect on immigrants' ability to defend themselves in court. Now, all can access courts without fear of being arrested and detained by ICE.
BREAKING: U.S. judge Jed S. Rakoff in New York declares ICE's policy of courthouse arrests to be illegal and enjoins it from making such arrests on the grounds of New York State courthouses or of anyone required to travel to a NYS courthouse as a party or witness to a lawsuit.

#BREAKING: BDS wins release of 10 immigrants detained by ICE in NJ. Federal judge finds that ICE continued to be deliberately indifferent to the basic needs of people in immigration detention. This is a huge victory, but we won't stop until we #FreeThemAll.

This summer, the nation watched as the NYPD brutalized marchers for Black lives. They beat, batoned, punched, injured, shoved, and pepper-sprayed protestors, and drove cars into crowds. The @NewYorkStateAG is suing the NYPD today over these abuses.
#BREAKING: I’m filing a lawsuit against the New York City Police Department to bring an end to its pattern of repeatedly and blatantly violating the rights of New Yorkers. No one is above the law — not even the individuals charged with enforcing it.

If ICE is outside your door: ✓ Do not open the door ✓ Ask to see a warrant signed by a judge ✓ Tell them: “I do not consent. Please leave.” Remember: #WeHaveRights. Watch our series with @ACLU to prepare for encounters with ICE: WeHaveRights.us bit.ly/WHREng1

BREAKING: NYC Defenders call for immediate release of vulnerable incarcerated New Yorkers in response to #Covid_19. "A coronavirus outbreak in our overcrowded, poorly maintained jails and prison facilities would be devastating, swift, and deadly. "

NYC Mayor de Blasio is giving people released from jail winter coats, MetroCards, and $25 debit cards. This is not being "soft-on-crime" as the New York Post claims, but rather providing the most basic reentry support for people returning to our communities.
