My student asked me: “Why doesn’t it count if I say that you are doing a great job?”. I have wanted to write about this and act on this for the longest time. A 🧵 about why I think we should introduce accountability for being “a good mentor” in Academia. 1/n

Hey senior PIs, will negative reviewer comments + grant rejections ever stop feeling like “your ideas suck, you suck, go home”? Asking for a friend. 😭😭😭😭

A trainee in Academia shouldn’t go through some sort of Darwinian selection process because they are alone and need to make it on their own. We are losing good people because of this, and potentially selecting for a PI phenotype that will re-iterate this system to ♾. 6/n

A reminder that PIs are people too.

So very grateful for this ☺️ Many thanks to the reviewers, the interview panel and @UKRI_News for sharing our vision and enabling us to push it forward in the next few years. We will do our best. 🚀💪🏻💜🧫🔬

The only way out, in my opinion, is to somehow introduce the “being a good mentor” metrics in the tenure process. We need to be held accountable for this. Let’s reward PIs that care and select against those that don’t. Or we will never change the culture of Academia. 8/n

Easter didn’t bring chocolate eggs this year but rather a lot of positive COVID tests in my lab 😭. Luckily the PI is negative 🙃, can still pipette 😂, and can take care of our baby organoids🥰. Happy Easter break 🤪

I don’t agree with “it doesn’t matter if they are jerks if they can find a cure for something”. Because I cannot believe that someone truly wants to help patients if they don’t care about the people around them. The people that are also helping them in their mission. 9/n

To end on a positive note. I read many tweets here about the importance of mentorship. So I’m hopeful. Hopeful that we can fundamentally change the system. People will thrive. Science will thrive. Please reach out to your Institutions to discuss this. I will. 11/end

I hear and watch too many PIs not valuing mentorship because “it takes too much time”, “it is not worth your time”, “only papers and grants matter to get tenure”. If this is not you, this is someone you know. 3/n
