NEW BOOK! I think I forgot to tell everyone that I wrote a book. It’s the longest thread about the prison industry I’ve ever written, and it’s out this week. I’m honored by the response so far. Please get a copy!

Today I testified in Congress. I was asked if I thought slavery still exist. “Yes. It’s not just that it exists in practice, but that, in the 13th Amendment, there is an exception that reads ‘except as punishment for a crime,’ which means, by law, slavery is still allowed.”

There is something huge happening in the prison industry and no one appears to be paying attention: the correctional healthcare sector is collapsing. THREAD
BREAKING: Wellpath, the nation's largest prison healthcare provider is preparing to file for bankruptcy despite making $2.4Bn in revenues annually. This is the next in a line of providers facing financial troubles due at least in part to malpractice. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Testifying in Congress, I was asked: Do you believe the prison industry should be abolished? My answer: Yes. The prison industry makes money in two ways—by increasing revenue, which means more bodies behind bars and for longer, and by cutting expenses, which means poorer care.

Some GOOD NEWS for a change! This one is personal — it’s been a long time in the making. Thank you to all those who helped along the way.
BREAKING HUGE WIN! 🚨 New York just announced that phone calls will soon be FREE in New York prisons, bringing around $13 million in relief annually to incarcerated people and their families. The new policy is expected to go into effect on August 1st. Spread the news!

We’ve been asking for awhile, but can we please make all prison and jail phone calls free now? People inside need to check on their loved ones outside and vice versa. Come on.

THREAD. Predatory prison telecom Securus has just defaulted on over $1 BILLION in debt. After years of preying on incarcerated people and their families, driving many into debt, Securus can't pay its own. Here's the story about how advocacy made this happen.

The U.S. is homicidal. The Supreme Court allowed a man to be executed by nitrogen suffocation in Alabama this week. It lasted a 38 horrific mins. Alabama outlawed nitrogen suffocation as a method for putting down animals in 2018 because it was inhumane.

Who is responsible for digitizing prison mail, one of the most dehumanizing recent corrections innovations? This guy, Jon Logan, CEO of Smart Communications, who flaunts his new wealth w obnoxious suits, cars, and yachts. What does he say to those he harms for profit? Thank you

I just heard that California prison visit rooms are full because folks inside have been able to rekindle relationships thanks to our legislation that made calls free. My heart is singing and I’m grateful for all our partners in this work.

This was the “hack” that incarcerated people used to create the $1M they spent on the corporation’s own predatorily priced services. It would be a comedy, if Securus wasn’t now blocking people from communicating with their families until they “repay” them. You can’t make this up.

We’re cutting library and school budgets for this... NYPD responded to an accident. The vehicles left without even a police report. Having blocked the street, the police just hung out, telling cars to drive around into oncoming traffic. They left when a doorman asked them to.
