4/5 My stepbrother’s case was one of them. He died of service-related head and neck cancer on June 2, 2023, after serving the Army for over a decade in special forces. He was strong and courageous, goofy and brilliant, stubborn and encouraging.

On this Memorial Day, our family’s first without Cooper, I’m acutely aware that every lost service member is a whole, beloved person. A person whose laugh, or sense of adventure, or bear hugs are missed every day.

5/5 Cooper packed a lot into 35 years. It was far too few. He would remind us that there are no extraordinary people, just ordinary people stepping forward to do what’s needed. On this Memorial Day, I’d argue that they are one and the same. 💙
