Seed phrases were a breakthrough for Bitcoiners. But they also handed users the hardest part of the problem: securing them.
Bitkey takes a different approach.
We've published Bitkey's source code since we launched a year ago, so anyone could see how it works and use it for non-commercial purposes.
Now, we're moving to a fully open-source license. Tell us what you want to build with it.
What does it mean to not have a seed phrase?
Is it keyless?
No—you’re still in control of private keys. Seed phrases are just one way to store them.
Is it custodial?
No—you hold 2-of-3 multisig keys. No one can move funds without you.
Is it vendor lock-in?
No—you can exit
Bitkey doesn’t use seed phrases—but that doesn’t mean vendor lock-in. You can unilaterally exit at any time, with no reliance on our app or servers.
We believe hardware signers should NEVER leak private keys—not even as seeds. That’s why Bitkey wallet exits happen on-chain, not
The most secure Bitcoiners have been seedless for years. They set up 3-of-5 multisig, destroy the seeds, and rotate devices when they fail.
Why? Because they understand that private key material should never leave secure, air-gapped, intrusion-protected hardware.
Going seedless
Just finished watching all the sessions I missed in person. What a high signal conference! Thank you @blockspace
It was such an honor to share the stage with @Rob1Ham@rot13maxi@nvk for my first panel. 🧡
It’s a 2-of-3 multisig, so the recovery system is based on using the remaining keys to migrate funds to a new wallet whenever a key is lost.
The details vary based on whether you lose your phone, hardware, or both. Lots of info here.

We’ve got some big privacy upgrades coming this summer. Even holding one of your three keys, we won’t be able to see your balance or transactions.
This is thanks to a signing protocol we’ve developed where the chain code is never revealed to the collaborative custodian.
We’ll
I think we should acknowledge the difference between signing solutions and security solutions.
If a product’s first step is to export all of its secrets, it’s not a security solution.
How could it be? It’s just a signer.
We should stop conflating signer security with bitcoin
