Over the past half a year, @KyivIndependent looked into the rising AWOL/desertion issue. The spike is especially critical as Ukraine faces a deepening infantry shortage on the front, allowing Russian troops to probe and advance in thinly manned sectors.

4 months ago in Mariupol... 💔 My heart is bleeding.

I am currently in #Kyiv, reporting #Russia's war 24/7 for @KyivIndependent while also completing my degrees for university in the U.S. Despite being a straight-A student, my university refused to re-extend the deadline, saying that it would be against "the university protocols.”

Inside the Azovstal steel plant in #Mariupol, where more than 1,000 civilians (children, women, elderly) were hiding in the basement for almost two months. Children are playing and keeping each other company but they are saying they want to go home, go outside in the sun 💔

It’s unreasonable that my university is demanding me to do my homework when there is an all-out war happening in my country and fightings taking place in and around the city. Hey @WilliamWoodsU, what do you think?

Since Feb. 24, my Ukrainian friend in Amsterdam has been working tirelessly to send as much humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Today, she tried to send food to children in Bucha through NGOs. But she got a reply that there was no need because "most of them were killed."

The directors and professors told me that I had the chance to drop my courses a month ago when I asked about what would happen to me as a university student if Russia were to launch an all-out war against Ukraine (WHICH IS HAPPENING NOW).

I still can't get over how a Russian girl (who used to be my good friend) told me that she didn't want to read/see what her country is doing to Ukraine because she "can't do anything about it." She is more concerned about the Russophobic messages she gets, says it's "not fair."

New activity at the office today - colleagues (@IAPonomarenko and @IgorKossov) compared Russian army food ration to Ukrainian army food rations. Our unboxing and ration taste test video coming out soon on @KyivIndependent’s social media.

My grandparents' hometown in Japan now has trains painted in blue and yellow in a show of solidarity with #Ukraine. Japan is with you, Ukraine. 💙💛
