I always loved how subtle the dimorphism between dragons was in httyd, then came the 3rd movie and God forbid the children get confused if Toothless girlfriend wasn't a sparkly, pretty girl dragon princess (did I mention she's a GIRL?!? buy our toys plz)
She is, but the the design choices were obviously made with the traditional gender perception in mind. The different species thing sound like an excuse

There's been other closely related dragons to the night fury in the franchise, like the skrill and the wooly howl yet none of them display the LF's feminine characteristics. Why? Because she was SPECIFICALLY designed to be Toothless girlfriend
