I've spent over a month in Bengal covering the election and its aftermath 🧵 My last story was about the odd case of Rajarhat New Town. Both BJP and Trinamool claim that officials manipulated the results in this seat. The Election Commission's response? 👇

I'm constantly astonished by Amulya's story. 112 days in jail during a pandemic. For what? Having a John Lennonesque view of the world? If you didn't think of the world like that at 19, you're part of the problem. And to think of what her family has had to go through...

"She has enough documents to prove that she is Sabiya Khatun. But a tribunal had declared her a foreigner because the panchayat secretary, who provided a certificate to prove her parental linkage, failed to appear before it to testify that he had issued the certificate." (1/2)

Watched Laal Singh Chaddha yesterday. It was better than Forest Gump. Didn't realise how much I missed a good old Bollywood movie with so many emotions packed into 3 hours. More of this, please! Hope we retire 'concept' films, historicals set in ancient India and biopics.

This is the story of somebody who had to spend more than 3 years at a detention camp in Assam. I have no words to describe what has become of us. thehindubusinessline.com/blink/cover/st… (2/2)

Why don't we think about the Queer Azadi Mumbai members who collaborated with the police and RW to get a fellow trans* activist charged with sedition in the same way that we think about the Uber driver who took a passenger to the cops for talking about protests? (1/2)

Our story from Mumbai about OTT platforms in India crawling when they were asked to bend. While Bharat's political leadership aspires to rub shoulders with Western superpowers at the global high table, the best of India's creative minds worry we might be becoming the next Iran.
New: Under pressure from the Hindu right, Netflix and Amazon in India drop projects touching on political, social issues and documentaries. After "Tandav," Amazon's head went into hiding and surrendered passport. Netflix execs feared risk of arrest. washingtonpost.com/world/2023/11/…

Our new story about Manipur's prolonged internet shutdown. Public interest triggered by "viral" events notwithstanding, the conflict has remained out of sight for the rest of the world. We argue THAT is the purpose the shutdown serves. With @gerryshih

Spent most of the last three weeks understanding what is happening in Manipur. I visited the state and spent some time both in the valley and the hills. Our report, with pictures I clicked during my visit, is out now: washingtonpost.com/world/2023/05/… Written with @karishma__m__ (1/8)

I've been tweeting about the Assam NRC for a couple of weeks now. But suddenly this tweet blew up thanks to retweets by the likes of @gautambhatia88. I have nothing of my own to share. But I'd just like to thank @char_chapori @abdulkazad @angshuman_ch among others for their work.

Both are instances of citizens turning against citizens even when no crime was committed. While so many people wrote about the former here and elsewhere, the latter is still not seen this way. Among other things, this reeks of classism too. (2/2)

In which Prasoon Joshi uses phrases like "cultural fabric" and "indigenous point of view" to ask for regulation of OTT content on the sly. This piece was written right after his Twitter meltdown over @ReallySwara's Rasbhari. Ofc Express had to publish it.

Moving story. Brought back memories of the time when Ananya Pandey opened up about her struggles growing up at a time when her father's career was going through a low phase.
