Drugs like Ozempic are great for weight loss, but they make some people feel sick. We discovered that the brain circuits mediating the appetite suppression are distinct from those that mediate nausea – a finding that may be leveraged to develop more selective GLP1-based drugs.

Our latest paper is online @Cell_Metabolism! Work led by the fantastic @PennNGG student @NitsanGoldstein and techs @_Aaron_McKnight and @jamiecartyy demonstrates that sugar and fat utilize different gut-brain pathways to communicate with the hypothalamus

My lab turns 2 today 🎂🎉 - what an incredible year! Our team has grown. We applied for tons of grants and were awarded some (including 3 trainee grants!). And we've had a lot of fun doing science. Excited to see what year 3 will bring!

When Nathaniel, a bioengineering postbac, joined the lab 2 years ago, I had no idea he would have such an ENORMOUS impact on our research program. Last night we celebrated and mourned his leaving to start a PhD @Caltech. I’m so proud- watch out for great things from this one!!!

How does the brain integrate sensory and nutritive information to guide food preference? Work led by N. Nyema with @_Aaron_McKnight, @_alexvtheg, @professor_myers on the sex-depenent role of AgRP neurons in mediating flavor-nutrient associations is out in @MolMetab.
Flavor-nutrient learning unveiled: AgRP neurons, key drivers of feeding behavior, play a surprising role. 🧠🍽️ #neuroscience 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬@MonellSc @Penn 🔗sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

My lab is 1 year old today! Huge shout out to @_Aaron_McKnight, my superstar tech, who was there from day 0 and set up the lab from scratch in the middle of a pandemic! One year later, I feel so lucky to have an amazing team and I’m very proud of what we’ve done in a year!
