- I once asked a lawyer* why legal terms are in Latin & he pointed out that definitions in English drift & migrate through usage but using a dead language made it more likely that definitions would remain static over years & centuries. Rare example of a lawyer* making a good point.Since the Romans are all dead, it's probably safe to stop giving things Latin scientific names that nobody understands now.
