The final amount is in. The State of Alabama will spend $1.082 billion for a new prison, the most expensive prison ever built in the United States. $270,500 per bed.

Since the DOJ began its investigation into Alabama's prisons four years ago, they have only gotten more overcrowded, homicide rates in the prison have gone up, abuse by staff has continued, and conditions have deteriorated further. It is shameful. #alpolitics

If Alabama's leaders truly were concerned about victims, they would fix and invest in systems meant to aid these families. #alpolitics alabamareflector.com/2023/05/02/ala… via @ALReflector

Terry is one of nearly 1,000 Alabamians we spoke with about the harms of criminal justice debt. Watch his story & read our full report that documents how court debt hurts people, undermines public safety, & furthers AL’s racial wealth divide. alabamaappleseed.org/underpressure/

Alabama's prisons are designed to hold 12,388 people. There are 25,920 in ADOC custody today. The answer isn't bigger prisons: it is addressing the fact that Alabama has one of the highest incarceration rates in America, and indeed of any jurisdiction in the world. #alpolitics

This is true in AL. The punishments for failing to pay court debt are so severe that Alabamians must often choose b/t purchasing food or medicine & paying down their court debt. We surveyed nearly 1000 Alabamians about this - stay tuned for our findings. governing.com/columns/public…
