If you think you're becoming more religious but at the same time you're becoming less merciful, less understanding, less compassionate, and more judgmental and needlessly critical of people around you - you're def not becoming more religious.

I don't know who needs to hear this (all of us), but Allah's door is always open to you. No matter what you've done, He awaits you with more mercy greater than the sum of whatever you've done. If anyone tells you otherwise, that claim is worse than anything a sinner has done.
