Six years ago, I was in the exact same place I am right now but instead of working with tiny tots, I was having my own. Happy 6th Birthday to my sweet girls!
1 hour into my shift: “Send that nigger doctor in here! And bring me a whip. My grandaddy owned slaves.”
It’s going to be a triple caffeinated sort of day.

New attending started today
Me: ***starts presenting**
Him: “I’m sorry, who are you?”
Me: “LOL. We just met. Alana”
Him: “No. I mean, why is a nurse presenting these patients?”
Me: “I’m…not a nurse.”
Him: **looks at badge** “Oh. This makes more sense.”

A few days ago, a patient called me a nigger. I pushed it to the back of my mind and when I left work, I cried in my truck for hour. Then convinced myself I was fine. That’s toxic AF. Don’t be me. Protect your peace. #BlackHistoryMonth#MedTwitter#BlackinMedicine
My co-residents and the nurses handled the situation really well. For me, knowing the people I work with have my back is the best support I can get and they did that!
Yeah. That’s not really the point. It’s clear that nurses don’t present on rounds here, on this service, because he was confused as to why I was presenting…when he thought I was a nurse.
#MedTwitter, I survived my week of nights in MICU. I’ve had to pronounce someone dead AT LEAST once each night. I’m tired of begging people to get vaccinated but…please, get vaccinated. This is devastating.
Me as man gets on elevator: Which floor?
Him: Oh, you can’t badge me in. Im pretty sure only healthcare providers can access these floors.
**sees him read my badge**
Me as I exit the elevator: Have a good day, doc!
