Let’s build a strong national movement to defend higher education. We have a lot of work ahead of us.
It’s worth reminding those critical of the student protests raging across the US: Gaza no longer has universities. Every single university in Gaza has been bombed into oblivion. Hundreds of academics, scholars, professors, & students have been killed since Oct. 7. #scholasticide
1. 🧵 Tomorrow, the @BORUSG is expected to vote to end tenure for Georgia's public universities. The AAUP has warned that this move will destroy protections for academic freedom, which is indispensable for the quality of teaching and research in higher education.
Dozens of campuses quietly implemented new “expressive activity” policies over the summer—effectively banning many forms of protest. motherjones.com/politics/2024/…
Non-tenure-track positions of all types now account for over 70 percent of all instructional staff appointments in American higher education.
#DefendHigherEd#Organize
The AAUP & our chapters defend the right to free speech & peaceful protest on university campuses, condemn the militarized response by institutional leaders to these activities, & vehemently oppose the politically motivated assault on higher education.

WATCH: Among those arrested today were Noelle McAfee, Chair of the Philosophy Department at Emory University.
I’ve asked for a comment from Emory on this arrest, no word yet.
This video provided to us by an #Emory PHD student. You can hear him in this video. @ATLNewsFirst
Someone who calls professors “enemies” & openly advocates for an authoritarian takeover of colleges & universities (despite benefiting from both public & ivy league educations) is now on a presidential ticket.
Drop everything & organize like hell now.

Nearly 70% of US faculty members hold contingent (nontenured/non-TT) appointments compared to about 47% in 1987. This trend is not sustainable if #academicfreedom is to survive in our society.
“By ceding the high ground to demagogues like Stefanik, the fallout from this affair is more likely in the long run to hamper the fight against antisemitism than to bolster it, which is beyond unfortunate bc no one can deny the scourge of antisemitism.”
"The AAUP condemns in the strongest possible terms the crackdown on peaceful dissent occurring this week at @Columbia, @nyuniversity, & other universities nationwide."
