For #WomensHistoryMonth, get to know Maria Mitchell!

Born on Nantucket, Maria Mitchell was the first internationally known woman to work as a professional astronomer and a professor of astronomy. In 1847, she discovered a comet that was later named in her honor. For this discovery, she became a local celebrity and was widely sought-after in the scientific community. Mitchell went on to become one of the first women members of the American Philosophical Society and helped found the Association for the Advancement of Woman.

You can learn more about Maria Mitchell, her achievements, and her legacy at the @mariamitchellassociation across Nantucket Island. The association's buildings include her birthplace, two observatories, an aquarium, a natural history museum, and a science library.
