About us

The Virtual Hacking Labs provides hands-on penetration testing training for individuals, students, businesses, universities, and government organizations. Our training philosophy is based on the belief that effective learning comes from realistic, scenario-driven practice combined with clear and easy-to-understand courseware. To support this approach, we have built a virtual penetration testing environment: The Virtual Hacking Labs.

Our labs are designed to simulate real-world attack scenarios and infrastructure, allowing learners to develop practical, job-relevant skills in offensive security starting from the ground up. The focus is on understanding systems, identifying weaknesses, and applying techniques in environments that reflect real challenges. The latest addition to our course portfolio includes an IoT penetration testing course, extending this approach to embedded and smart devices.

Our History

Virtual Hacking Labs was developed in 2016 and officially launched in early 2017. In a time when platforms like HackTheBox and TryHackMe did not yet exist, and Offensive Security was one of the few providers available, we set out to create something different.

From the very beginning, our focus has been strictly on real-world labs with realistic scenarios. We consciously avoided CTF-style elements and hand-holding for any of our courses and labs. There are no checkboxes to tick off and no step-by-step walkthroughs to follow. Instead, we challenge you to think and act like a professional penetration tester.

Over the years, we have helped thousands of students achieve their goals, whether that’s obtaining their OSCP certification, landing a job in offensive security, or reaching personal milestones. As we look to the future, our commitment remains unchanged: we will continue to build realistic labs, produce detailed, high-quality courseware, and develop new courses that prepare you for the real world.

What makes VHL different?

Offensive Security Courses

Our training focuses on real-world attack techniques in network, web, and IoT penetration testing, with a strong focus on hands-on practice instead of theoretical or multiple-choice–based learning.

Realistic security labs & training

  • Clearly explained course content
  • Network, Web & IoT penetration testing
  • Realistic lab scenarios
  • Designed for beginners and intermediate-level practitioners

Each lab is designed to reflect challenges security teams face in real environments.

Our Mission

Our mission is to deliver high-quality penetration testing labs and training materials at an affordable rate for (aspiring) information security professionals who want to build real technical skills rather than complete checkbox-driven or multiple-choice–based training. Each lab is carefully designed to mirror the types of problems and constraints faced by security teams in real environments.

Continuous Improvement

Virtual Hacking Labs continuously develops new course materials to ensure relevance and to help professionals maintain the knowledge and skill level expected in the field. Our training programs start from fundamental concepts and gradually progress toward more advanced topics. There is no hand-holding or guided walkthroughs; learners are expected to analyze problems, research solutions, and solve challenges independently or collaboratively, just as they would in real-world penetration testing engagements.

Who is this platform for?

The Virtual Hacking Labs platform is designed for:

  • Students building cybersecurity skills.
  • Security researchers & Penetration testers.
  • Cybersecurity professionals sharpening hands-on skills.
  • Companies & organizations training employees.
  • Educational institutions (schools, universities, bootcamps).
  • Career switchers entering IT security.

What will you learn?

After completing the Virtual Hacking Labs training courses, learners can:

  • Identify and exploit real-world security vulnerabilities.
  • Perform network, web, and IoT penetration tests.
  • Perform security research on IoT devices.
  • Analyze attack techniques and defensive measures.
  • Simulate and respond to security incidents.
  • Operate from both attacker and defender perspectives.

These are practical, demonstrable skills, not theory alone.

Why hands-on security training matters

Offensive security, penetration testing and security research cannot be mastered through books alone. Real attacks are complex, unpredictable, context-driven and require a deep level of understanding through practical training.

Hands-on labs:

  • Accelerate learning
  • Improve problem-solving skills
  • Align better with employer expectations
  • Prepare learners for real-world situations

This is why organizations increasingly choose practical cybersecurity training over theory-only training.

Ferdi Bak

Founder & Lead Instructor

With over 15 years of experience in IT, software development, offensive security and training, I founded Virtual Hacking Labs to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. My passion lies in discovering vulnerabilities, conducting hands-on security research, and transforming my findings into high-quality training content and challenging labs that help others reach their goals.

“Real security starts with understanding how things break; every system, application, and IoT device presents a new challenge to unravel and new opportunities to learn.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Virtual Hacking Labs?
The Virtual Hacking Labs (VHL) is a hands-on offensive security training platform focused on real-world attack techniques across network environments, web applications and IoT devices. It provides realistic labs designed to help learners develop practical skills beyond theory and multiple-choice exams.
Is this platform suitable for beginners?
Yes. Virtual Hacking Labs is suitable for beginners while also remaining valuable for intermediate learners through more advanced labs. The labs are designed to build foundational skills and gradually introduce more complex, real-world attack scenarios. The labs are suitable for beginners looking to get into offensive security, preparing for certifications (such as OSCP), getting into the work field or meet personal goals.
Is this training relevant for companies and organizations?
Yes. Many organizations use these labs for internal training, upskilling, and security readiness programs.
Do I need to purchase specific hardware?
No. The PT01 Penetration Testing and PT02 Penetration Testing courses are designed to be completed entirely using a Windows or Mac system with a virtualized Kali Linux installation. However, we provide a list of optional hardware for students enrolled in the IoT Penetration Testing course who wish to build their own physical home lab for IoT security testing. This is entirely optional.
Do I receive a certificate upon completion?
Yes. Upon successful completion of the requirements you receive the VHL Certificate of Completion (Regular/Advanced+/Advanced+2) for the PT01 and PT02 courses. Passing the practical exam for the IoT Penetration Testing course earns you the VHL Certified IoT Penetration Tester (VHL CIPT-01) certification.
What are the prerequisites for this course?
Participants should have a basic understanding of Linux (command line), TCP/IP networking, and virtualization on Windows or Mac to follow the PT01 Penetration Testing course. While prior penetration testing experience can be helpful, the course is structured to guide you from fundamentals to advanced topics.
