The Faculty of Science conducts pioneering interdisciplinary research – applied and fundamental - addressing contemporary challenges of national and global importance.

Research excellence

The Faculty of Science is a leading hub for innovative research powered by our renowned faculty and advanced programs. Home to over 160 internationally acclaimed professors, 140 postdoctoral fellows and nearly 575 graduate students, we rank among Canada’s most research-intensive science faculties, overseeing more than 400 projects with annual funding exceeding $55 million. Our faculty includes a Wolf Prize laureate, three NSERC Gerhard Herzberg Gold Medalists, numerous Royal Society of Canada Fellows, a Canada Excellence Research Chair, 13 Canada Research Chairs, and 9 University of Ottawa Research Chairs. Our cutting-edge facilities enable transformative research in areas such as Catalysis, Environmental Toxins, and Quantum Photonics. The establishment of the STEM Complex and the Advanced Research Complex, as well as strategic partnerships such as the Max Planck-University of Ottawa Centre for Extreme and Quantum Photonics, pave the way for significant discoveries that tackle urgent global issues.

Join us in pushing the boundaries of science and shaping the future through research that makes a difference.

Research Office

The Research Office was established to support and promote research at the Faculty of Science. It serves as the main liaison between granting agencies and researchers, as well as with University of Ottawa research services.

The office also assists researchers in preparing grant and scholarship applications, as well as research chair applications and award nominations.

Research Funding

Faculty of Science Development Fund

The Faculty of Science Development Fund, created from overhead funds collected on research contracts, is available to researchers of the Faculty of Science. Funds are available to support projects that will significantly contribute to research activities within the Faculty of Science. This may include matching funds for various internal and external research programs, seed funds to develop new research initiatives, and funds for general improvements to the research infrastructure of the Faculty of Science.

What lies beneath Greenland could change what we know about rising seas

A new study led by researchers at the University of Ottawa provides a series of highly detailed 3-D models of the Earth’s temperature beneath Greenland and northeastern Canada, providing insights into the region’s geological history and the response of the ice sheet to past and future climate change.

Studying the role of the quantum environment in attosecond science

Scientists have developed a new way to model how electrons lose quantum coherence during attosecond experiments. By adding a realistic quantum “heat bath,” they can better predict strong-field light–matter interactions and capture clearer snapshots of ultrafast electron dynamics.
