Why is WordPress an awesome platform?

WordPress has been around since 2001 and are still being developed and enhanced. Furthermore it is a free CMS platform that are easy to use, but I you are a developer or just a tech kind of guy, you can customize things in so many ways.

You can edit directly in the php/html code or you can even create your own plugins. If you are not that kind of guy, you can choose to download from a library of more than 56.000 plugins. Many of them are free and some you will have to pay for. Because WordPress is used by so many users all over the world there many non-profit communities where you can get help, tips or tricks to your WordPress blog.

If you have a business and want a website where you can update news on a daily/weekly basis, you can pay a local company to setup and install your business website and take over and post news yourself when everything is in place. That is the power of WordPress if you ask me. WordPress can be customized in so many ways to support any things from a website, a blog, a Wiki site or a personally diary, if that what you are looking for.

 

How to Get Started With Your Own Blog

Blogging is still one of the most effective ways to build an online presence, share your expertise, and create long‑term passive traffic. Whether you want to grow a business, build a personal brand, or simply share your knowledge, a blog gives you full control over your content and audience.

🛠 Step 1: Choose Your Niche

For a beginning it is important that you know choose the right niche for you. What do you actually want to blog about. What is on your mind? Why do you want to start a blog in the first place and can you contribute with unique knowledge to and audience. That is some of the questions you should start answer to your self.

🌐 Step 2: Pick a blogging platform

For many people, WordPress.org is a good choice because it offers:

– Full ownership of your content
– Thousands of plugins and themes
– Unlimited customization
– Strong SEO capabilities

🏠 Step 3: Choose a Domain Name and Hosting

Your domain name is your online identity.
Good domain guidelines:

– Short and easy to spell
– Reflects your niche
– Avoids hyphens and numbers

Don’t just rush into buying the first domain you can find that are free. You should choose wisely. You might want to consider if you need a country specific domain. If you want to reach a global audience you should choose a .net or .com domain. It might be more expensive and harder to find one that is not already taken. However, it will rank better world-wide. When I started this blog it was with the domain techwork.dk. It was fine for a start, but I wanted to reach a world-wide audience and my local Danish domain was not ranking that well.

After 10 years with this blog, I took the big decision to buy a new domain that would rank better. It was not easy, because this is a tech blog and all the good names are already taken. Because I had this blog 10 years on my old domain, before I moved to my current domain a lot of my traffic and SEO is still coming from my old domain. Because of that I am still paying for the old domain.

🎨 Step 4: Install WordPress and Pick a Theme

Once you have your new blog installed, you should pick a good theme that your like. There is many free themes out there and you can always switch to another Theme later.

Here is a few advise for you. Make sure your theme are:

– Lightweight
– Mobile‑friendly
– SEO‑optimized
– Easy to customize

🔌 Step 5: Install Essential Plugin

To keep things simple, start with a few must‑have plugins:

  • SEO plugin (Rank Math or Yoast)
  • Caching plugin (WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache)
  • Security plugin (Wordfence — which you already cover on your site)
  • Backup plugin (UpdraftPlus)

Start with foundational posts:
