This fabric basket tutorial shows you how to sew a cute little basket using just one fat quarter, or two if you want a different fabric for the lining. It’s quick, beginner friendly, and one of those projects you’ll want to make over and over.
The finished small basket measures approximately 3½” high x 4″ wide x 4″ long – perfect for threads, clips, or all those little bits that end up scattered across your sewing table. They also make really sweet little gift baskets for Easter or Halloween.
I’m sharing everything you need to make the small size for free right here, along with a step by step video tutorial that walks you through every step. If you’d like to make it in other sizes, I’ve got a printable PDF pattern with four sizes available in my Etsy shop HERE.

What you’ll need:
- 1 fat quarter (or 2 for a contrasting lining)
- Fusible Fleece – I used Pellon 987F(or batting/interfacing of

- Thread
- Rotary Cutter, Ruler & Mat
- Pins
- Point Turner (optional)
- Iron – I have this one and this one and love both
- Wool Ironing Mat or Ironing Board
- Sewing machine – I have this one
Cutting instructions:
- (4) 6½” x 8½” Main and Lining Frabric
- (1) 4″ x 11″ Handle Fabric
- (2) 6½” x 8½” Fusible Fleece for Lining
- (1) 1″ x 11″ Fusible Fleece for Handle

The boxed corner method is simple, you just cut a square from the bottom corners of each piece, sew it up, and pinch the corners together. If you’ve never done boxed corners before, don’t worry, I walk through it slowly in the video.
For the structure, I used Pellon 987F Fusible Fleece on the lining pieces and on the inside of the handle. You could also use interfacing, or both fleece and interfacing together, depending on how sturdy you want your basket to be.
