Bouncy staccato strings carry the melody with perky efficiency, a xylophone hops around doing exactly what xylophones were put on this earth to do, and a flute adds just enough lightness to keep the whole thing airborne. It’s light orchestral incidental music of the highest order – the kind that plays whilst a cartoon character is doing something industrious and slightly ridiculous.

Dark Side Of Mars is named for its inspiration – the battlescape music from the original XCOM game, that masterpiece of strategic tension where every mission felt like it might be the last. That specific atmosphere of industrial dread and slow-burning threat is reproduced here with considerable skill. A deep grinding bass establishes the character immediately whilst distorted percussion adds industrial weight, and horror elements – screeches, shrieks, and tapping – build the texture into something genuinely unsettling. Chrome Zone does one thing with considerable authority: it sounds exactly like the Sega Genesis/Megadrive era of gaming, because that is precisely what it was designed to do. The particular FM synthesis sound of the Genesis/Megadrive – slightly brassy, determinedly funky, and possessed of a cheerful confidence that defined 16-bit platform game soundtracks – is reproduced here with genuine fidelity to the original hardware. The melody bounces along with the energetic determination of someone who has several screens of enemies to defeat and is looking forward to every one of them. It loops seamlessly, which makes it immediately practical for actual game development or gaming content of any kind.

The Other Place is unsettling in a very specific and considered way – not threatening exactly, but deeply strange, as if the rules of physics in this particular location are operating under a different set of assumptions. Agent Dougwood, whoever they may be, has clearly been briefed on the mission and found it thrilling. Codename Dougwood is a big, camp spy jazz theme that transports you immediately to the swinging 1960s, where every mission was conducted in a dinner jacket and the music was always slightly more exciting than the actual espionage. Latin percussion drives the rhythm with urgent energy, brash horn section punches add dramatic punctuation, and a jazz flute – because of course there is a jazz flute – provides the kind of melodic coolness that the era demanded. Thunderous timpani and triangle add period character, and the overall effect is simultaneously tense and gloriously over-the-top.

Sweatin’ Like A Pig is very fast techno music that is also, somehow, quite funny. Big, frantic beats power the track at 189 BPM whilst buzzing bass and buildups create the characteristic tension-and-release structure of club techno, and breakdowns arrive to briefly lower the intensity before everything crashes back in with renewed enthusiasm. A vocal sample and vocoder action add character and a degree of cheerful absurdity that stops the track taking itself entirely seriously – because at this tempo and with this name, that would be slightly pompous. It is extremely energetic. Dancing to it would probably, as the title suggests, have fairly predictable physical consequences.

Magic Of The Season is one of those Christmas tracks that actually understands what festive excitement feels like from the inside – the particular breathless energy of Christmas morning, or the anticipation of a journey through winter landscapes to somewhere warm and full of people you’re pleased to see. A full orchestral ensemble throws itself at the task with considerable enthusiasm: bouncy strings carry the main melody whilst glockenspiel and vibraphone add sparkle, woodwind sections dart about with seasonal joy, and sleigh bells do exactly what sleigh bells are supposed to do. It builds and travels, which is rather appropriate for music about setting off somewhere wonderful.

Time Travellin’ Nancy proceeds from a simple and brilliant premise: what if someone took a drum machine back to 1880 and set up a band? The honky-tonk piano plays exactly as it would have done in a frontier saloon, the double bass walks with period-appropriate bounce, and then a thoroughly modern fat beat arrives underneath it all and the hybrid becomes something genuinely delightful. A kazoo also features, because of course it does – the decision was made and there was no going back from it. The result is upbeat, jolly, and carefree in the way that only music confidently straddling two entirely different eras can be.

Monsieur Miaow is a track that could only exist in the internet age, created in full and cheerful acknowledgment of the internet’s primary preoccupation. Gentle, sweet piano and acoustic guitar provide a warm, approachable musical foundation – do-wop influenced, slightly bouncy, and thoroughly pleasant. And then the feline element makes itself known, because of course it does, and the whole thing becomes something uniquely and delightfully specific. It’s irreverent without being silly, sweet without being cloying, and possessed of a distinct musical personality that makes it considerably more charming than its concept might suggest to the sceptical. The name alone is worth something. Monsieur Miaow. Bon.

Dark Flashes is built around something genuinely clever. The piano sample comes from public domain recordings of Bix Beiderbecke – specifically his pieces ‘In the Dark’ and ‘Flashes’, combined and rearranged to form the melodic backbone of the track. Ancient jazz meeting modern production, with warbling flute mellotrons adding vintage warmth, crackly vinyl texture giving the whole thing authentic age, and a deep contemporary bass and echoing percussion providing the modern counterpoint that makes the combination work so well. The result sits in the lo-fi jazz space but with more musical intelligence than the genre average – genuinely off-kilter and genuinely cool.
