Here I am again sir @rustybrick:disqus , with an eagle eye checking your very helpful website. The 'volatility' in 4th paragraph is spelled wrong.
ON TOPIC: Here in Philippines, results shuffle not just every hour, but also every refresh. However, this 'every refresh' experience is not so often. Still this is so annoying that you have to go to previous refreshed results because the site you are looking for in the newly refreshed results was gone.
GOOGLE gone DUMB.
All those emails used as evidence in court revealed just how low they will go to make a buck. Now with Nick Faux in charge, he is free to fulfill his fantasy to turn search into a heaping pile of shit. Below is a snippet from one of those court docs. Even back then Google knew they couldn't innovate their way to higher profits, and had to rely on enshitification to extract more revenue out of each user by running users through the Google Grinder.

LOL That's a creepy pic.
I just can't take anymore of what these gaslighters say. These people at Google lie so much they shouldn't even have their words published.
search is completely unusable. I have accepted that the business is dead but I still spend a couple of hours a day maintaining the sites. I am pretty much ready to completely pull the plug. What is the point?
a) WKA is just another ai answers take all announced 2025. it's not good for websites.
b) google is not rolling back aio
the reality: unless a major media company, it's over for websites. the sooner you move on, the sooner your life will improve.
sucks but true.
Ok, so guys. I made two predictions in July 2024 on barrys site.
a) Apple will launch a search engine in 2026
b) We will see AI Overview rollback by 31st March 2026
Let me tell you where we are.
Apple = Apple is releasing "World Knowledge Answers" in iOS 26.4 expected around 31st March 2026. Millions of iPhone users are about to get their answers without ever seeing a Google search result. (Apple is using Google’s AI to steal Google’s search traffic) I honestly think this is the start for apple, and we will see more and more creators / websites uploaded going into their ecosystem.
Rollback of AIO = It seems to be heading for an acceleation rather than rollback to my dismay, I don't know if it will change by March 31st 2026 but I hope so, it seems Google is doubling down trying to make people use to using AI overviews but honestly people are not that engaged.
Google have forgotten that websites are human. Apple's World Knowledge Answers will ...come from real people running real websites powered by Gemini - we all know... Those websites need traffic to survive, without it those answers will be bad man. This was one differentiation that google could do, keep the human voice, pivot on the human touch as all content like life experiences can't be copied by a machine...but right now it can't see it. So messed up.

I haven't been in the SEO game for very long,

Then get out while you can. Its hard to imagine much of a future in this industry, if anyones been in 'not very long' then get a career change in while its financially viable.
I haven't been in the SEO game for very long, but long enough to say this is the first time I've seen hourly swings of this magnitude.
Yes, hourly changes happen but to Darshit's point, my clients site will rank #1 for it's own name, which is unique (not some generic short tail keyword), and then 52nd. It's wild.
I will also say this is the biggest swing by location I've seen as well. Ranking #1 for a long-tail keyword in one city and not ranking at all in another city. And it's not a location-specific keyword either. Very generic.
I've been reading your content for years, you've been so incredibly helpful And I hope whatever you're going through doesn't last long and things become bright again someday.
search is getting worse. i was googling for a product (shampoo) and trying to find their website. i typed the full brand and product name. guess what? google showed me irrelevant websites while they're shoving 'sponsored ads' and shopping panel ads everywhere.
i had to add 'official website' behind my search just to get the brand's website.
just another evidence they're fucking search up just for ad profits.

So take the VP of Search's comments for what they're worth - nothing. It's just more mass gaslighting, lies, etc. being shoveled into the mouths of publishers.
Exactly. This fagcreature Robbystein is just another soulless Google shitdemon and under control of his master Scumdar.

Our B2B SaaS website used to rank at #1 or #2 for a specific keyword. As of last week, that keyword no longer shows up on the SERP. But according to SEM Rush and Ahrefs, we are still number one for that keyword. It seems the trackers (SRush and Ahrefs) can't keep up with this volatility. Any suggestions for a SaaS company that gets most of its leads from organic search? We are over 80% down compared to before Nov 2025.
Barry, some of the quotes you've included here are actually from your article on the Liz Reid interview .
Enjoy your days off.
I'm having the same issue now March 2026. I have 28 reviews on my business and 14 of them have gone missing. One of the reviewers says she can still see it on her end, but it doesn't show publicly. I've already put a ticket into Google but I'm not very hopeful about this. This is really frustrating as my Google Review page is specifically what has brought people in.

He mentioned how Google has taught its models on how to link out to sources.
A few days ago a story was posted on SEL about Google's AI citing Google owned properties and the percentage of citations tripling in less than a year. So take the VP of Search's comments for what they're worth - nothing. It's just more mass gaslighting, lies, etc. being shoveled into the mouths of publishers.
Google’s AI Mode is citing Google more than any other site: Study - https://searchengineland.com/google-ai-mode-citing-google-more-study-471042

In June 2025, Google cited itself in just 5.7% of AI Mode answers. That share is now tripled.
Nearly one in five AI citations now comes from Google. Including YouTube, Google-controlled properties account for roughly 20% of sources.
Self-preferencing on steroids. AI Overviews already link heavily to Google properties like Maps, Images, and YouTube. AI Mode appears to extend that approach by pushing users deeper into Google’s ecosystem, often through additional search results rather than external sites.

End of 1st quarter is < 3 weeks away. Google probably elevated their criminal activity so they can report another revenue record to shareholders. Max volatility for an extended period my indicate the Google Crime Syndicate is having a hard time finding enough victims to rob to meet their financial goals. Advertisers best pause their ads if they don't want to be victimized by Google's ad spend theft.
