Welcome!

I’m a scholar, writer, and designer who works to support community-led processes that build shared power, dismantle the matrix of domination, and advance ecological survival. I am a nonbinary trans femme. My books Design Justice: Community-Led Practices to Build the Worlds We Need and Out of the Shadows, Into the Streets (both with MIT Press) are open access and freely available.

BOOKS

Single-authored books

An exploration of how design might be led by marginalized communities, dismantle structural inequality, and advance collective liberation and ecological survival.

What is the relationship between design, power, and social justice? “Design justice” is an approach to design that is led by marginalized communities and that aims expilcitly to challenge, rather than reproduce, structural inequalities.

An exploration of transformative media organizing, through a series of richly detailed cases from the immigrant rights movement.

The revolution will be tweeted, but tweets alone do not the revolution make. Costanza-Chock shows us how savvy community organizers use participatory media to strengthen movement identity, win political and economic victories, and transform public consciousness forever.
