‘Conservation timber,’ wood with a story!
A year and a half ago, Stichting Probos was asked to use its knowledge and contacts to develop a market for ‘conservation timber’ as part of the Cities4Forests program.
This has resulted in partnerships between the municipalities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam and forest communities in Suriname, Bolivia, Guyana, and Guatemala.
Conservation timber from these community forests can be applied in benches, boardwalks, and bridges.
Bigi Poika eerste FSC-gecertificeerde gemeenschap van Suriname
On 14 October 2025, the Surinamese community of Bigi Poika received its Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certificate from the President of Suriname, Jennifer Simons. With this achievement, Bigi Poika becomes the first community in Suriname to obtain this international recognition for sustainable forest management.

Probos celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2025
During our 60 years of existence, we have built up a wealth of knowledge and experience within our organisation and the broad network we collaborate with. This knowledge is, of course, closely linked to our greatest asset: our team of dedicated professionals. Supported by our Supervisory Board and Advisory Board, we work tirelessly towards the Probos mission: a healthy living environment for people and nature.
For Probos counts: strong and healthy forests are essential. That’s why we always put forests at the center of our work, tirelessly promoting sustainable forest management and forest expansion, in The Netherlands and far beyond.
This jubilee year calls for special activities. During our major Forest Symposium coming fall, we will launch the Forest Barometer—an interactive website that makes our data accessible, combined with data from related organisations. After all, data is the foundation of our work as a knowledge organisation. In 2025, we will continue publishing Bosberichten and organise various fun activities to celebrate our anniversary. It promises to be a special year.
Above all, we are committed to making 2025 a great year for forests worldwide.
