FAQ
Getting Started
How do I install Pluginventory?
You'll need two things: a Pluginventory account and the connector plugin installed on each WordPress site you want to track.
-
Create your account at pluginventory.com
-
Generate an Install Token from your account settings page
-
Install and activate the Pluginventory connector plugin on your WordPress site
-
Go to Settings → Pluginventory, paste your Install Token, and click Pair Site
-
Click Send Test Report to verify the connection
Repeat steps 3–5 for each site you want to track. On multisite networks, you can pair all subsites at once from the Network Admin screen.
How can I connect my site to my Pluginventory account?
You'll need an Install Token, which you can generate from your account settings page at app.pluginventory.com.
- In your WordPress admin, go to Settings → Pluginventory
- Paste your Install Token and click Pair Site
- Click Send Test Report to confirm everything is connected
- Head to your Pluginventory dashboard and see your site appear
The same token works across all your sites — just repeat the steps for each one.
What versions of WordPress does Pluginventory work with?
Pluginventory requires WordPress 5.0 or higher and PHP 7.4 or higher. It has been tested up to WordPress 6.9.
Does Pluginventory work with WordPress multisites?
Yes. Pluginventory fully supports multisite networks, including both subdomain and subdirectory setups.
When network-activated, a dedicated screen in Network Admin lets you set shared defaults, pair all subsites at once, and trigger reports across your entire network.
You can also manage each subsite individually if you prefer.
Do I need to add Pluginventory to all my sites?
Your call. Pluginventory works best when it has a full view of your sites, but it works just fine with only a site or two. The connector plugin is lightweight and read-only — it won't cause conflicts or slow anything down.
Features & Functionality
What data does Pluginventory pull from my site?
Pluginventory collects only technical site and plugin information — never any user data, post content, or personally identifiable information.
Each report includes your site URL, WordPress version, PHP version, database version, memory limit, environment type (production, staging, etc.), and your active theme name and version. For each installed plugin, it collects the name, version, author, active/inactive status, whether an update is available, and the minimum PHP and WordPress requirements the plugin declares.
That's it. No logins, no emails, no content. You can see the full technical breakdown in the Privacy Policy section of the plugin's readme.
How often does Pluginventory check my sites?
Once per day. After you pair your site, Pluginventory schedules a daily background report via WordPress cron.
You can also trigger a report anytime — either from the Send Test Report button in your WordPress settings, or directly from your Pluginventory dashboard using the remote trigger feature.
Can I update or change plugins through Pluginventory?
No. Pluginventory is read-only — it reports on what's installed but can't install, update, activate, or remove anything on your sites.
If you need remote plugin management, tools like ManageWP or MainWP are designed for that. Many agencies use both: a management tool for actions and Pluginventory for visibility.
Do Pluginventory and ManageWP work together?
They won't conflict. Pluginventory is a lightweight read-only plugin, so it runs happily alongside ManageWP or any other site management tool.
Many agencies use a management tool for updates and backups while using Pluginventory for the cross-site visibility layer — knowing exactly what's installed where, what's out of date, and what needs attention.
What about themes?
Pluginventory focuses on plugins.
In our experience, themes rarely cause the kind of sprawl and conflict issues that plugins do. Clients tend to pick a theme and stick with it — plugins are where things get unpredictable. And according to Patchstack's 2026 security report, plugins accounted for 91% of new WordPress vulnerabilities.
That said, if full theme tracking is something you'd find valuable, we'd love to hear about it — reach out anytime.
Does Pluginventory work with any CMS besides WordPress?
No. You should move your site to WordPress 🙂
Security & Privacy
Is my data secure?
Every report is signed with an HMAC-SHA256 signature using a secret unique to your site, and all communication happens over HTTPS.
Pluginventory only collects technical site and plugin information — never usernames, passwords, emails, or content. You can read the full breakdown in our privacy policy.
What happens if I deactivate or remove the plugin?
If you deactivate it, daily reports stop but your pairing settings are preserved — reactivate anytime and it picks up where it left off.
If you delete the plugin entirely, all stored settings, tokens, and secrets are removed from your database. Your historical data in your Pluginventory dashboard is unaffected either way.
Pricing
Is Pluginventory free?
Right now, yes — Pluginventory is completely free while we're in early access.
As we grow, we plan to introduce paid tiers based on the number of sites you manage, but we intend to always offer a free tier.
Support
How can I get support?
Head to our contact page and we'll get back to you as quickly as we can. If you're having trouble with pairing or reports, the settings screen in your WordPress admin shows diagnostic info including the last report status and error hints — that's often the fastest way to troubleshoot.
How can I request a feature?
We'd love to hear from you. Drop us a note through our contact page — we read every request and it directly shapes what we build next.
Should I take a nap now?
Yes. You'll feel better if you nap.
