Dream it. Design it. Build it.
Open Works is a non-profit Makerspace that was founded in 2016. Since then, we have been working hard to rebuild Baltimore’s manufacturing economy from the ground up by connecting makers to manufacturing equipment, space, education, and Baltimore’s largest community of maker professionals.
With 34,000 square feet of fabrication shops, studio space, classrooms, an on-site coffee shop, Open Works is the the largest maker space on the east coast. Flexible membership options mean you can access everything, or just the tools you need, by the day or by the month. But our tools are just a starting point. Our greatest strength is the diverse group of makers that work here — future friends, collaborators, and co-creators.
Come for the tools, stay for the community!
PATH TO MEMBERSHIP
Want to join the Open Works Community? Here’s how:
To become a member, follow these easy steps:
step 1
Attend Community Orientation
Orientation is a free hour long tour with a staff member, and is offered multiple times weekly! After you sign up, you will receive an email confirmation for the date and time you selected. Get a breakdown of our class offerings, see the shops and studios, and feel the vibe!
step 2
Take a Class
Take a class or two to learn the basics of the equipment you want to start with, and get signed off for independent usage.
(Not required for photo printing, vinyl cutting, 3D printing, or spray booth)
You can take classes to unlock addtional shops and equipment later as you need!
step 3
Choose Your Plan
We have membership plans to fit your business size, needs and budget. Find the plan that is right for you. Signing up for your membership plan must be done and paid for in person.
Our mission is to make tools, technology, and the knowledge to use them accessible to all.
Machines & Tools
Open Works has seven machine shops: Textiles, Electronics, 3D Printing, Digital Media, Wood, Metal, and Digital Fabrication. Our Computer Lab has 16 machines so you can plan out and design everything you need digitally before you set blade to material. Our facility is professionally staffed and maintained, freeing you up to do what you do best — make stuff!
Shop Access and Microstudios
Pro Membership gives makers access to up to 7 different fabrication shops. We offer sliding scale pricing of $85-150 for Pro membership, and all Pro members have the same access options regardless of how much they pay.
Microstudios put makers at the heart of Baltimore’s largest creative community. Our modular studios are flexible, short term, and perfect for coworking or launching your business. Microstudios start at $205/month.
Both services are monthly subscriptions which users must attend an orientation tour before starting. The orientation schedule and full plan options are available on our membership page.
Classes and Workshops
Our classes help makers get foundational hands-on experience with the equipment throughout the building, and review shop norms and machine safety. The more classes you take, the more shops you unlock!
Contract Services
Open Works offers contract fabrication services including prototyping, short-run manufacturing, signage production, and custom architectural fabrication. See our portfolio on the contract services page!

Space Rentals
Our spacious, bright classroom or lobby are the perfect spaces for your next board meeting, corporate training, information session, or group retreat. Both event spaces are equipped with A/V, wifi, and modular furniture, and are available 7 days a week by reservation.
