I was genuinely impressed with the MDASH demo during Satya's keynote. While my first thoughts watching these demos are usually "wow, I'm living in an actual sci-fi movie", this time my first thought was, "IT is going to have to move so much faster." AI compresses the timeline from discovery to exploit. That means the gap between "a new version is available" and "my fleet is protected" just got a lot more risky to leave open. I'm hoping we see more admins using Autopatch, Hotpatch, and Enterprise App Management — because that last mile is critical! Most organisations deploying Microsoft Copilot are not monitoring it. Not really. Not at the level that matters. They may have Purview switched on (many still don’t, or at least don’t monitor it!). They have compliance dashboards. They know which sensitivity labels are being referenced. What they do not have is detection coverage for what happens when someone, or something, uses Copilot as the vector. Copilot is no longer a chat interface. It is an identity-aware, agent-capable platform that can deploy plugins, run scheduled prompts, query data, and take actions on behalf of users and service identities. If a threat actor compromises a privileged account today, they do not just move laterally through your network. They inherit that user's Copilot context. They can exfiltrate quietly, persist through agent configuration, and do it in a way that looks entirely legitimate from a compliance perspective. That is the problem. Compliance and privacy tooling is doing its job. It is not built to be a correlation engine. Sentinel can. Microsoft has continued to expand the telemetry surface over recent months. The Copilot data connector and the A365 Observability connector now bring Copilot interaction events, agent execution traces, plugin lifecycle, and promptbook operations into Sentinel as first-class signals. None of it flows by default. All of it requires deliberate deployment and detection engineering to be useful. We are already working on this. If you are deploying Copilot at scale and you have not asked your security team what detection coverage exists for AI agent activity, that is the conversation to start. I had heard of Double Key Encryption before. I had not really thought about it through the lens of Microsoft 365 Copilot grounding until Benjamin Niaulin called it out at ECS last week. That was the lightbulb moment for me. 💡 Sensitivity labels matter. Permissions matter. Restricted Content Discovery matters. Access control matters. But labels are not invisibility cloaks. If a file is highly sensitive, the question is not only: “Can the right people access it?” It is also: “Can Copilot access or reason over the content at all?” That is where Double Key Encryption becomes such an interesting part of the conversation. It is not a control every organization will need everywhere. In fact, it is probably best reserved for the content that truly warrants that level of protection. But it is a useful reminder that Copilot readiness is not just about turning AI on safely. It is about understanding how your existing security, compliance, and governance controls actually interact with AI in practice. I always enjoy moments like this. When something you already “know” gets reframed in a way that makes you realize there was still more to learn.
