Srinivas Peddada liked thisSrinivas Peddada liked thisMost people associate the monsoon with coughs, colds, and seasonal flu. Very few think about their eyes. And yet, every year, ophthalmologists see a noticeable rise in eye infections during the rainy season. The reason is not the rain itself. Crowded trains. Packed buses. Shared office spaces. Higher humidity. And more people are spending time indoors in close proximity to one another. Many common eye infections, particularly viral conjunctivitis, spread through contact. A contaminated hand touching a railing, a shared surface in the workplace, or simply close interaction with an infected individual can be enough to transmit the infection. What makes this challenging is that it often starts with symptoms that seem harmless. A little redness. A little watering. A mild irritation. Many people continue commuting, attending meetings, and working through it, often unaware that they may be spreading the infection to others. In cities across India, where millions of people rely on public transport every day, this creates the perfect environment for outbreaks to travel quickly. The good news is that prevention remains remarkably simple. Frequent hand washing. Avoiding rubbing the eyes. Not sharing towels or personal items. Seeking medical advice early rather than self-medicating. Most importantly, if an eye infection develops, remember that it is not just a personal health issue, it is also a public health issue. The same train coach, office floor, classroom, or meeting room that helps ideas travel can also help infections travel. As the monsoon arrives, we often remember to carry an umbrella. It may be worth paying equal attention to the health habits that protect our eyes. Srinivas Peddada liked thisSrinivas Peddada liked thisYesterday marked the last day of a transformational three weeks on campus as part of my MPH in Epidemiology, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health The coursework spanned Regulation and Ethics, Health Policy, R Programming, and Propensity Score Methodology. I’m deeply #grateful for the opportunity to learn and continue learning alongside such thoughtful and inspiring classmates, and I’m already looking forward to graduating with them next May! One concept from my time on campus that will stay with me is Kingdon’s Agenda-Setting Model, introduced by the fascinating John McDonough and how the problem, policy, and politics streams must align for health issues to move onto the policy agenda. It made me reflect on how evidence, narrative, timing, and political context all shape whether an issue gains traction. For me, it reinforced that generating strong evidence is only part of the challenge; translating that evidence into meaningful impact also requires understanding how research, policy, stakeholder priorities, and political will align. This perspective will continue to shape how I approach my work. I’m also very grateful to my leaders at Bayer, Noman Paracha and Reg Waldeck 🟦 for giving me the opportunity, support and encouragement to pursue this masters in Epi. In the meantime, I’m excited to continue my studies and lead an analysis in #ProstateCancer using IRONMAN data with Lorelei Mucci and her wonderful team. I truly appreciate the support and opportunity to become integrated within her department. Especially in such a fast-moving market, action looks like progress, while waiting feels like a risk. But there is a difference between moving fast and moving prematurely. True patience as a leader is a deliberate, strategic discipline. It means having the stamina to let a long-term strategy mature, even when short-term pressures demand a quick victory. It means giving a team the space to solve a complex issue thoroughly, rather than stepping in to impose a temporary fix. Compounding takes time – whether you are building organisational capability or earning market trust. If you try to force momentum before the foundations are ready, you do not accelerate growth. You simply accelerate the rate of error. Urgency drives execution. But patience is what ensures sustainability.
