Given our work at Coefficient helping the UK government to counter deepfake harms, it's pretty useful getting to know the teams globally in the advertising & film industry who right now are producing the best AI-generated content. What they make creates economic value and joy, not harm, but they're using the same techniques as criminals who use AI maliciously, and it's imperative that we remain at the very cutting edge of what's possible. Here are my recommended talks for Data Engineers and MLOps practitioners, plus a bonus one! 🌊 Kafka Streaming, the Pythonic Way — Arthur A.. I like the approach of treating Kafka as micro-batches deserialised into Arrow-backed DataFrames, so processing code looks identical whether the source is Parquet or a live topic. You'll get acquainted with Confluent Kafka. The learnings from 10 years of using this pattern in production is the best part. 🛡️ Governance-as-Code for the Lakehouse — Viktor Kessler (Vakamo). Iceberg REST Catalog with OPA/Cedar policy-as-code, engine-agnostic across Spark, Flink and Trino. My day job involves bringing this capability to streaming data so I always appreciate tales of alternative architectural patterns. ⚡️ Columnar Thinking — Kamlesh Shah (Morgan Stanley). Columnar is the way to go for really wide data: cache-sensitive access, SIMD-friendly memory layouts and Arrow's zero-copy format. Looking forward to the mechanical sympathy angle here, beyond the usual Polars vs pandas benchmarks. 📚 Beyond Spark MLlib: Deduplicating Common Crawl at Scale — Ken O. (Lyft). A big problem with preparing training data for LLMs is the amount of duplication. Solved with partition-aware MinHash LSH: 253M Common Crawl documents deduplicated in under 5 hours on a 9-node EMR cluster. If you're building or retraining models on web-scale corpora, this one is for you. 🏰 Build your castle, dig your moat: AI sovereignty, provenance and compliance — Dawn Gibson Wages (Anaconda, Inc.). Self-hosted LLM evaluation, supply chain security and signed models. Sovereign AI is on the strategic roadmaps of all regulated industries and companies using air-gapped environments. Dry subject but you can trust Dawn to make it fun! 💰 SELECT instance FROM cloud WHERE workload = ? ORDER BY cost_efficiency — Gergely Daróczi. Cloud instance selection as a data query problem, backed by an open-source benchmark dataset across thousands of instance types covering gradient-boosted training and LLM inference. Instance picking is still more art than science and I'll take any low-level hardware benchmark data I can get. 🗣️ Vibe NLP for Applied NLP — Ines Montani (Explosion, spaCy). Using LLMs to build NLP systems rather than be the NLP system. Ines is one of my favourite practitioners in the space and LLM-assisted development of small, fast and data-private NLP solutions is the exact kind of pragmatic engineering we need more of. 😓 The Human-in-the-Loop is Tired — 🧐 Laura Summers (Pydantic). I recently wrote about token anxiety so I'm curious about Laura's observations on the peculiar fatigue of holding intent in your head while the machine generates lots of mostly-correct output. Looking forward to learning the patterns so I can recognise it when it's happening. "When you're short of speakers, it can be really difficult having to send cold emails to potential speakers and all of that. If we had a speaker bank — oh, I need a speaker! NumFOCUS, can you get me one?" It's a simple idea with a massive potential impact for local PyData chapters everywhere — especially in smaller cities where networks are thinner, and outreach is harder. Our sincere thanks to the organisers for such an amazing event, opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony and inspiring speech from Rt Hon Caroline Nokes MP. In case you missed it, we will be presenting this work again at the UK and Ireland Speech (UKIS) conference next week at Kings College London. PoliceAI, hosted by the College of Policing, brings together operational policing expertise and AI capability under a single body with a clear mandate: responsible, transparent and trusted AI that delivers tangible benefits for officers, victims and the public. Its initial focus areas include automating case file preparation to speed up charging decisions, identifying and categorising child sexual abuse material to reduce officer exposure and support faster investigations, and AI-powered analysis of CCTV and digital evidence to generate early investigative leads. PoliceAI is also establishing the PoliceAI Threat Hub (PATH) to support forces in responding to the criminal misuse of AI, including deepfakes and emerging threats. For suppliers, this is the moment to understand PoliceAI's priorities, align product development with its emerging standards, and engage constructively with the governance frameworks being put in place. It was a privilege to attend and show my support for the vision behind this initiative: using AI responsibly, ethically and practically to strengthen capability, improve efficiency and support better outcomes for the public. The opportunity ahead is huge, but so is the responsibility. Building trust, transparency and strong governance around AI will be critical as policing continues to explore how emerging technologies can be used safely and effectively. A special mention to Dylan Alldridge Lewis Lincoln-Gordon Alex Murray who will be leading the charge. Their leadership, ambition and commitment will be key to turning this vision into real impact. My highlights were: - Kafka in Python (ok, mostly in Rust) Arthur A. - Deduplicating Common Crawl (ok, mostly in PySpark) Ken O. - Self-hosted data catalogues with Iceberg and Lakekeeper Viktor Kessler - An ensemble on what's going on with agents (a lot, stop rolling your own and learn about new tools) Jeremiah Lowin But what I want to write about is the post-conference pub crawl, where, after a restroom break, I turned the wrong direction and ended up in an underground venue where about 80 Kiwis were watching their team playing England??? in Florida??? The photo was made in the quarter-time break??? I have nothing else to say about the World Cup... The kiwis were super nice, btw, and explained the new rules to me kindly...
