Allen Bernard reposted thisAllen Bernard reposted thisThirteen years ago, my then 5-year-old niece Brianna changed my life by inspiring me to train for the 2013 Boston Athletic Association Boston Marathon with the Genzyme National Organization for Rare Disorders #Running4Rare team to raise awareness about her newly diagnosed rare disease (Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia, Spastic Paraplegia Foundation, Inc). Six months later, her parents had an in-depth discussion with then Sanofi-Genzyme COO David Meeker on the intricacies of drug discovery, development, and advocacy on the eve of the marathon. That weekend, Brianna powered her walker around Newton City Hall in a joyous international walk. It was a wonderful culmination of the journey to race day. Brianna's ultra-rare disease (https://lnkd.in/e5itAtKB) has always been at the forefront of my mind when I think about the need to revolutionize the development and manufacturing of new medicines and modalities, and I've followed developments in advanced technologies through the lens of HSP treatments. One of the key leaders in the hunt for a treatment has been Dr. Craig Blackstone, formerly of The National Institutes of Health, who is now the Chief of the Movement Disorders Division at Mass General Brigham. As a young child, Brianna contributed her cells to the NIH and Dr. Blackstone to support HSP research. Today, Brianna returned to Boston to meet Dr. Blackstone and learned how her cells continue to power experiments and papers that are advancing the field. Now we can envision a world where, with further innovation and research, HSP treatments could emerge using cutting-edge genetic therapeutics known as antisense oligonucleotides. This prospect was not on the table 13 years ago. Brianna has grown and thrived as a high school senior, most recently interning in the Ohio House of Representatives and being named one of Ohio's two delegates to American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation in Washington, DC. Brianna's journey from patient to research contributor to thriving teenager reminds me why adversity doesn't define us, and why we must continue pushing the boundaries of what's possible in rare disease treatment. #SanofiStories Sanofi

AI is moving at insane speed: face recognition, voice cloning, deepfakes… Today, I can’t even remember the last time I scrolled social media and was 100% sure something was real. And image/video generation models? They don’t “create” from scratch. They remix. A bit from here, a bit from there. Your face, your photos… all fair game if you’re careless with what you share. We’re not just training models anymore. We’re training risks. So use AI, but use it responsibly. The line between creativity and chaos has never been thinner. #ai #responsibleai

I was very surprised (maybe I shouldn't have been) that AI generated misinformation has been a problem for a lot longer than I realized. Allen Bernard liked thisAllen Bernard liked thisThe technical writing profession is not dying. It is being redefined. The companies winning on developer experience are investing in documentation. The AI tools that actually work are built on top of well structured, accurate, human governed content. And for the first time, there is real data connecting documentation directly to revenue, retention, and product adoption. The tedious parts of the job are being automated. The maintenance. The drift detection. The consistency checking. That frees writers to focus on the work only humans can do. The strategy. The architecture. The judgment. The audience for documentation used to be one developer at a time. Now it is AI agents acting on behalf of thousands of users simultaneously. The stakes have never been higher. And the people who understand how information needs to be structured for machines to act on it reliably are exactly the people this industry trained. The writers who will thrive are not the ones who resist AI. They are the ones who learn to govern it, build with it, and make sure it serves the people who depend on accurate information. The future of this profession is not smaller. It is different. And for those willing to evolve with it, it is genuinely exciting. What are you doing to position yourself for where this is going?

Allen Bernard liked thisAllen Bernard liked thisBy now, everybody's seen the story about Shy Girl being pulled/canceled because of AI content. As an editor and a writer, I want to know what the indicators were that justified the action, though, because the AI-written target seems to be a moving one. On LinkedIn, I see at least three posts a week (and you might see more) claiming to identify THE AI indicator. None of them agree. Most of them directly contradict previous claims. Em-dashes are definitely AI; repetition is AI for sure; certain structural patterns are definitely AI-exclusive. But LLMs were trained on good writing, so a lot of the phrasing and structure and punctuation they use are lifted from thousands of examples from good writing. This book got pulled because the publisher was shown evidence of AI use, but what was the evidence? AI detection tools are notoriously unreliable. Does the New York Times have a fool-proof AI detector that they're hiding from the rest of us? I want this tool. And if it’s just the same shifting, unreliable vibes we’re all using, I hope the author was given specifics. In this case, the AI usage seems confirmed — but imagine the same process applied to someone who didn’t use AI. Bad writing gets published all the time. Sometimes, the worst writing is by well-established authors, too. No one’s going to accuse George R.R. Martin of using AI if The Winds of Winter ever appears and he repeats ‘much and more’ six times on a page. But a debut author doing something far less egregious could lose their first shot at publication If there is a foolproof tool, I'd like to see it. If there's not, I hope these calls are being made carefully — it's high stakes for the publishers and extremely high stakes for the writers. See publicationI created this 4,500 word overview to give people suffering from hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) an understanding of how soon a treatment may be found and the many challenges that stand between that day and today.
While the words are mine, the article is really a collaboration between myself the five researchers who I interviewed since they were all intimately involved in its creation and in verifying the accuracy of its content as well as my interpretation of their work. It was…I created this 4,500 word overview to give people suffering from hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) an understanding of how soon a treatment may be found and the many challenges that stand between that day and today.
While the words are mine, the article is really a collaboration between myself the five researchers who I interviewed since they were all intimately involved in its creation and in verifying the accuracy of its content as well as my interpretation of their work. It was also professionally copy edited by Stephanie Baker so very much a group effort.
So far it has been very well received around the globe and translated into German and I feel it has achieved the goals I set for it from the outset.
This is also my most recent research and writing project and may be some of my best work to date.
