The claim that AI crypto is the "fastest-growing sector" needs context that matters more than the headline: growing from what baseline, and toward what utility? I've spent the last two years building at the intersection of AI and blockchain infrastructure, and the gap between hype cycles and actual implementation keeps widening. Most AI crypto projects are tokenizing AI services that don't need tokens, or adding AI labels to existing protocols without changing the fundamental architecture. The real question isn't whether AI and blockchain can merge, it's whether the merge creates something neither technology could achieve alone. What actually matters here is computational verifiability. AI models making autonomous decisions in DeFi need provable execution environments. When an AI agent manages liquidity or executes trades, you need cryptographic proof of what computation ran, not just trust in an API endpoint. That's where technologies like TEEs and on-chain ML inference become critical infrastructure, not buzzwords. The projects solving this are growing because they're addressing a real constraint: how do you trust an AI you can't audit? The sector's growth rate matters less than whether it's building toward decentralized AI inference or just repackaging centralized models with token incentives. In this interview, Molten Ventures CFO Andrew Zimmermann discusses the company’s FY25 performance, highlighting 13% gross portfolio value growth and 26% growth in the core portfolio.
