LinkedIn Background Images,
Designed Strategically

Your LinkedIn background image is prime real estate.

It sits at the top of your profile and frames your headline. It shapes perception before anyone reads a single word.

Most professionals either ignore it or treat it like decoration.

Strategic professionals use it to signal authority.

Let’s elevate yours.

LinkedIn Background Specifications,
Safe Areas & Device Cropping

Your LinkedIn background image does not display the same way across devices.

It is responsive and certain areas can become partially obstructed. And for Premium members, it can rotate as a carousel.

If you want your background to work strategically, you must design for all of that.

Recommended size: 1584 x 396 pixels
Minimum display size: 798 x 192 pixels
File types: JPG or PNG
Maximum file size: 8MB

LinkedIn Background Photo Dimensions

You can see how the LinkedIn Background image is hidden by the profile picture depending on the different displays by looking at the following screenshots:

LinkedIn Background Responsive Examples from Desktop to Mobile Portrait and Landscape

Desktop: The background image is only one size ever, no matter what size you make your desktop browser window, no matter which browser you see it on, no matter what device: it’s 798 by 192 pixels, though they (and we) recommend you double up on those pixels — 1584 by 396 — because many desktops and laptops, and most devices, have twice the pixel density than usual.

iOS app (iPhone, iPad) and Android app: Depending on whether the device is in portrait or landscape mode, the profile picture cloaks more of the background photo. Additional cropping occurs on the top on mobile.  This means anything placed too high or too far left near the profile photo may be hidden.

So whatever composition you use, be sure you put the important part of the image in the center right.

TIP: If there’s anything in the picture you wouldn’t want to see cut off, keep it away from the profile picture area!

LinkedIn Profile Background Image Best Practices

The question isn’t whether to use a background photo: it’s what to put in it. Here’s what works, what doesn’t, and how to make the right choice for your professional goals.

Single Image Backgrounds: What to Include

Your background should do ONE job well. Choose your lane:

Option 1: Tagline or Positioning Statement

Best for: Consultants, coaches, speakers, entrepreneurs, anyone building a personal brand

What it is: A clear statement of what you do or the value you deliver, positioned in the center-right area of the banner.

Examples that work:

  • “Helping CEOs Scale Without Losing Their Soul”
  • “Turning Data Into Revenue”
  • “Your Partner in Sustainable Growth”
  • “Making Compliance Simple for Startups”

What makes it work:

  • 5-10 words maximum
  • Clear benefit or outcome
  • Easy to read at a glance
  • Positioned where profile photo won’t cover it

What makes it cringe:

  • Generic buzzwords (“Innovative Leader,” “Passionate Professional”)
  • All caps shouting
  • Too many words (if they have to squint, you lost)
  • Motivational poster vibes
  • Trying to be clever instead of clear

Pro tip: Your tagline should answer “What do you help people do?” not “What are you passionate about?”

Option 2: Your Name + Title

Best for: Executives, senior leaders, professionals in traditional industries (finance, legal, healthcare)

What it is: Your name and professional title, cleanly designed

Examples that work:

  • “Sarah Johnson | Chief Marketing Officer”
  • “Dr. Michael Chen | Cardiologist & Researcher”
  • “Jennifer Martinez, CPA | Tax Strategy Advisor”

What makes it work:

  • Reinforces your authority
  • Professional and polished
  • Works well for senior roles where credibility matters more than creativity
  • Particularly effective if you have a credential or certification to highlight

What makes it cringe:

  • Using your profile photo again in the background (redundant!)
  • Overly decorative fonts that are hard to read
  • Including your email/phone number (looks desperate)
  • “Thought Leader” or “Influencer” as your title

Pro tip: This works best when paired with a strong headline below. The background reinforces, the headline sells.

Best for: Real estate professionals, architects, designers, photographers, anyone in a visual field

What it is: A high-quality photo that instantly signals what you do

Examples that work:

  • Real estate: Stunning property photo or cityscape
  • Healthcare: Clean medical imagery (NOT stock photos of stethoscopes)
  • Technology: Modern, minimalist tech-inspired graphics
  • Finance: Professional office setting or city skyline
  • Creative: Your actual work, portfolio pieces

What makes it work:

  • High-resolution, professional quality
  • Specific to YOUR work, not generic stock photos
  • Clean composition with breathing room
  • Reinforces your expertise visually

What makes it cringe:

  • Generic stock photos everyone else uses
  • Busy, cluttered images with too much happening
  • Photos where you can’t tell what industry you’re in
  • Using someone else’s work without permission

Pro tip: If you use a photo of your work, make sure it’s YOUR best work, not just something that fills the space.

Option 4: Inspirational Quote

Best for: Coaches, speakers, authors, HR professionals, anyone in transformation/development work

What it is: A quote that reflects your philosophy or approach

Examples that work:

  • “Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast” (for organizational development)
  • “The Best Time to Plant a Tree Was 20 Years Ago. The Second Best Time Is Now” (for career coaches)
  • “Your Network Is Your Net Worth” (for relationship-focused professionals)

What makes it work:

  • Short and memorable
  • Relevant to what you actually do
  • Positioned for readability
  • Attributed if it’s not yours

What makes it cringe:

  • Generic motivational quotes (“Believe in Yourself!”)
  • Quotes that have nothing to do with your work
  • Unattributed quotes you’re passing off as your own wisdom
  • Anything you’ve seen on 50 other LinkedIn profiles

Pro tip: If the quote could apply to literally anyone in any industry, it’s too generic. Make it specific to your lane.

Option 5: Company Logo or Brand Elements

Best for: Company employees who want to show organizational pride, brand managers, startup founders

What it is: Your company logo, brand colors, or branded graphics

Examples that work:

  • Subtle company logo in the corner with brand colors
  • Company tagline with logo
  • Brand pattern or design elements

What makes it work:

  • Reinforces company affiliation
  • Professional and polished
  • Shows you’re aligned with organizational brand
  • Works well if you’re recruiting or building company visibility

What makes it cringe:

  • Giant logo that screams “corporate drone”
  • Using company branding when you’re actively job searching (send the wrong signal!)
  • Outdated or low-resolution logos
  • Company branding when you own your own business (use YOUR brand!)

Pro tip: If you work for a well-known company, a subtle logo can add credibility. If you’re building a personal brand or consulting practice, your own brand should take priority.

Option 6: Minimal or Abstract Design

Best for: Executives, anyone in conservative industries, people who want polish without statement

What it is: Clean, professional design with minimal elements—think subtle gradients, geometric patterns, or simple color blocks

Examples that work:

  • Navy blue gradient fading to white
  • Subtle geometric pattern in brand colors
  • Clean horizontal stripe in an accent color
  • Minimalist mountain or wave silhouette

What makes it work:

  • Looks expensive and intentional
  • Doesn’t compete with your profile photo
  • Signals sophistication and restraint
  • Works across all industries

What makes it cringe:

  • Neon colors or busy patterns
  • Default LinkedIn blue (defeats the purpose)
  • Anything that looks like a PowerPoint template from 2005

Pro tip: Sometimes less is more. A simple, elegant background can elevate perception without saying a word.

LinkedIn Carousel Backgrounds: Strategic Frameworks

Carousels are powerful—but only if you have a strategy. Here are proven frameworks for what to include:

(Note: Carousel backgrounds require LinkedIn Premium)

  • Slide 2: Your signature framework or methodology
  • Slide 3: Proof points (results, credentials, recognition)
  • Slide 4: How to work with you or connect

Example:

  • Slide 1: “I Help Tech CEOs Scale Revenue Without Burning Out Their Teams”
  • Slide 2: “The Sustainable Growth Framework: Culture + Systems + Strategy”
  • Slide 3: “Trusted by 50+ Tech Companies | Featured in Forbes, Inc.”

  • Slide 2: “To Launching My Own Practice Built Around Life, Not Billable Hours”

  • Slide 1: The problem most people face
  • Slide 2: Why traditional approaches fail
  • Slide 3: The better way (your approach)
  • Slide 4: Invitation to learn more

  • Slide 2: “Because They’re Using Tools Built for Accountants, Not Decision-Makers”

  • Slide 4: “See How We Did It: Request a Demo”

Why it works: Identifies with pain point, positions your solution, creates curiosity

Best for: Executives, board members, industry veterans building multi-faceted brands

Structure:

  • Slide 1: Name + Title + Core positioning
  • Slide 2: Primary expertise area #1
  • Slide 3: Primary expertise area #2

  • Slide 3: “Keynote Speaker on Patient Experience & Technology”
  • Slide 4: “Board Member | Healthcare Startups & Nonprofits”
  • Slide 5: “Open to Board Opportunities & Speaking Engagements”

  • Slide 1: Who you serve + what you solve
  • Slide 2: Service/offering #1
  • Slide 3: Service/offering #2
