Depending on the blockchain, a certain amount of crypto is needed to run the nodes that help validate the transactions on the blockchain and thus secure the protocol. If you don’t have the amount or the inclination to run the node, then you can delegate your crypto to a validator who will collect the crypto and run the nodes for the delegates and share with you the rewards collected.
