Our responsible commitments

As a recognized company in the footwear industry in France

And with our international development ongoing, we are committed to offering our customers high-quality products while embracing a responsible approach, both socially and environmentally.

While these values have always been central to JONAK, today more than ever, we are aware of the importance of passing them on to our partners and clients.

Established in France since 1964, we have been distributing our own collections since the 1990s—a milestone that marked the start of a more creative journey and stronger commitments.

As a recognized company in the footwear industry in France

In December 2024, JONAK officially became a certified B Corp company with a score of 87.84. This international movement unites businesses committed to a more responsible, inclusive, and sustainable economy.

Achieving this certification means we meet rigorous standards for social and environmental impact, transparency, and accountability. This recognition marks a new chapter in our journey toward a more respectful and ethical fashion industry.

But this is just the beginning. Being a B Corp means continuously striving to do better.

Our CSR policy, established at the early stages of the global awareness of sustainable development challenges, is built around three major pillars: craftsmanship, durability, and community.

Every step of the manufacturing process, from leather selection to final touches, is meticulously respected to ensure well-crafted designs. We work tirelessly to enhance our shoes and guarantee a high standard of quality for products that will accompany you for years.

CRAFTMANSHIP

01.

EUROPE & INTERNATIONAL

To access a wide variety of craftsmanship suited to our needs and production, we have partnered with various European and international players. This diversity of talent is key to the eclecticism of our collections.

Europe: 72%

Asia: 25%

Maghreb: 3%

02.

RAW MATERIALS

Our shoes are primarily made from leather—a noble and natural material used for thousands of years. Strong and comfortable, it is the ultimate durable material. Aware of the environmental impact of its transformation, we aim to reduce our footprint by working with tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group (LWG).

LWG has developed the benchmark audit standard for leather manufacturers. They assess the environmental impact of leather production and grade facilities as Gold, Silver, Bronze, Audited, or Agent. This evaluation rewards facilities that limit chemical use, water and energy consumption, and emissions into air and water.

JONAK joined LWG in April 2023.

97% of our leather is certified.

55% is classified as Gold, Silver, or Bronze.

Our goals:

Reach 100% certified tanneries by 2027.
Encourage our partners to improve environmental efforts, aiming for 90% of our certified leathers to be Gold, Silver, or Bronze by the end of 2027.

03.

KNOW-HOW

True experts in their fields, the workshops we work with follow approximately 150 precise steps needed to craft a shoe. This passionate work continues an ancestral know-how that serves as a guarantee of quality.

04.

SUPPORTING FRENCH CRAFTSMANSHIP

Our boutique design is made in France. Furniture is crafted by ZM in Meudon. Lighting by Secante and Aristide, based near Paris. Signage is made exclusively from premium paper sourced from offcuts of other productions. We work with FemOffset, whose workshop is in Choisy-le-Roi. Decor elements are reused in several window displays and distributed internally to avoid warehouse transfers. Some are sourced from La Réserve des Arts. We also collaborate with Selency for second-hand decor and furniture. Other pieces are custom-made in France by:

  • o CCI PLV (Louvriers, Normandy)
  • o Trans Lucide (Paris 10th)
  • o In-house for select elements

Through full transparency, accessible care services, and a trusted network of skilled cobblers, we’re giving every pair of shoes the chance to go further.

Repair instead of replacing, maintain to preserve, and trace to choose better. We believe in a more responsible approach to fashion, where every step counts toward a lighter footprint and a longer life for your shoes.

Durability

01.

TRACEABILITY

Making a shoe involves around 100 steps and many key players. That’s why identifying every stakeholder is vital.

Today, 95.5% of our products meet JONAK's strict traceability criteria. The French AGEC law requires traceability up to the finishing stage—but we go further, tracing materials back to at least the raw material supplier (leather, soles, etc.).

This allows us to:

  • o Better understand our suppliers and materials, ensuring optimal quality and durability
  • o Verify working conditions in partner facilities
  • o Share essential info with our customers for greater transparency. Traceability info is available on every product page under “learn more about the traceability of this model”.

02.

THE WORKSHOP

Most JONAK shoes are made of leather—a natural and durable material. To ensure longevity, proper care is essential. That’s why we launched L’ATELIER JONAK, a shoe repair workshop located in central Paris, operating since 2021 to service shoes from our Paris-area stores.

In other regions, we partner with local cobblers near our boutiques. This boosts responsiveness, avoids unnecessary shipments, and supports local businesses.

03.

MAINTENANCE

Leather, being animal skin (cow, calf, goat, lamb), needs regular hydration— just like our skin. Different leather types require tailored care, using the right products. To help customers extend the life of their shoes, we created a care guide page with tips and a dedicated range of care products tailored to each material type.

Building trust-based relationships with partners and clients, grounded in openness and transparency. Behind every pair of shoes are people, skills, raw materials, logistics, and many other elements that we must act upon.

COMMUNITY

01.

PARTNERS

Since launching our own collections in the 1990s, we have formed long standing partnerships with some workshops—many over 30 years. On average, our manufacturing partnerships last 16 years. In Portugal, one of our partners exclusively produces for JONAK, ensuring trust, reactivity, and custom expertise. It also allows us to produce closely to demand and avoid excessive stock that generates emissions and waste.

As JONAK grows, new workshops have joined, forming a solid network of skilled professionals who adapt to each season's needs.

02.

WORKING CONDITIONS

We ensure fair working conditions not only for our employees but across all production partners: workshops, warehouses, and suppliers.

87% of our workshops have been audited by external firms according to ILO and local labor standards, focusing on:

Working hours, pay, rest days, infrastructure safety
Non-discrimination, no forced labor
Benefits and employee rights

Corrective action plans are implemented, and we work closely to improve identified points. Our goal: audit 100% of our factories by 2027.

03.

CODE OF CONDUCT

Our code reinforces ethical principles around human rights, equality, and freedom of expression:

  • o Legal working hours
  • o Adequate workspace per employee
  • o Proper tools and regular equipment checks
  • o Fair pay and bonuses
  • o Gender pay equity
  • o Equal employment opportunity
  • o Team-building and cohesion activities

Being responsible means caring not just about product quality, but about the origins of raw materials, production methods, environmental impact, distribution, and all factors related to the product—ensuring coherence with the brand’s values and respect for everyone involved.

To go even further, the majority of our factories:

o Use recycled cardboard or cardboard sourced from sustainably managed forests.

o Optimize their production lines to avoid excessive energy consumption.

o Collect, sort, and recycle their industrial waste.

o Install photovoltaic panels, source electricity from renewable energy, or use low-energy consumption machinery.

To go even further, the majority of our factories:

Jonak: a committed player

Jonak: a committed player

Beyond our operations, we support associations through annual donations and partnerships around societal causes close to our hearts. Since our foundation, JONAK has backed initiatives for equality, education, health, the environment, and the arts.

Each year, JONAK donates 1% of its revenue through financial or in-kind donations to organizations such as:

Cravate Solidaire: A nonprofit fighting hiring discrimination, offering job candidates in precarious situations clothing and coaching for interviews.

Secours Populaire Français: A public-interest organization fighting injustice and poverty in France and abroad.

Fondation One O One for Critical Care: Supporting personalized intensive care through training, research, and patient/family support programs.

A Living Story

At JONAK, art is not just a source of inspiration — it’s an ongoing dialogue. For years, we’ve been building close relationships with artists and artisans, firmly believing that creativity in all its forms deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated.

In 2018 and 2019, we offered Laura Gulshani and then Léa Augereau a space for expression through artist residencies curated by us. In 2021, while museums remained closed, we launched the project « La Culture fait le mur » — an open air exhibition across the streets of Paris, Lyon, and Bordeaux, bringing a poetic touch back to the urban landscape.

In 2022, with the « JONAK Summer Factory », we handed over our image to artists from diverse backgrounds, allowing them to reimagine and reinterpret the brand through their own creative lens.

Today, this commitment continues with the same passion: our storefronts come alive through collaborations with talents like Atelier Paolo and Anaïs Vindel, blending artisanal craftsmanship with artistic sensitivity. And in 2024, to celebrate our 60th anniversary, we gave full creative freedom to Thomas Lélu, a multidisciplinary artist known for his sharp wit — resulting in a joyful and thought-provoking collaboration.

We support all these projects financially, of course — but more importantly, we offer visibility and space for expression: in our stores, our offices, and obeyound our walls. Because art is alive. It’s meant to move, to circulate, to surprise, and to stir emotion.
