For over 45 years, IDEA has recognized the most significant achievements in industrial design and elevated the work that shapes lives, industries, and global innovation. If you have a project that demonstrates excellence, impact, or bold creative thinking, this is your moment to share it with the world. Entries are now closed.

Why Enter IDEA?

IDEA winners are celebrated across the international design community and featured prominently by IDSA. Award-winning work is showcased to thousands of design leaders, hiring managers, educators, and companies seeking top talent and breakthrough innovation.

Winning entries are accessioned into the permanent collection of The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, one of the most significant museum collections of American innovation. Winning IDEA means your work becomes part of an evolving story of human creativity.

Each entry is reviewed by a jury of world-renowned design professionals who evaluate submissions using IDEA’s five enduring criteria:

  • Design Innovation
  • Benefit to the User
  • Benefit to the Client or Brand
  • Benefit to Society
  • Appropriate Aesthetics

This ensures that IDEA winners represent the highest standards of the discipline across physical products, digital experiences, branding, service design, environments, and emerging practice.

Winning an IDEA Award offers credibility, visibility, and momentum. Past winners have leveraged their recognition to:

  • strengthen portfolios
  • secure new clients and partnerships
  • amplify new product launches
  • publish case studies
  • win media coverage
  • advance academic and student careers

For students, IDEA is one of the most respected ways to gain early recognition and stand out in a competitive professional landscape.

IDEA honors work that solves real problems, drives business impact, advances sustainability, improves user experience, celebrates culture, and pushes design forward. If your project was created with intention and meaning, IDEA is where it belongs.

This add-on award is unlike other IDEA awards that focus on the design of the product itself, the Impact Award evaluates the outcomes and effects of design.

It emphasizes:

  • Societal benefit
  • Equity and access
  • Long-term change
  • Cultural or behavioral influence
  • Environmental responsibility
  • Human-centered transformation

The Impact Award is an Add-On award and can be applied during the entry process for the above award categories.

New This Year: Impact Award

Impact Award asks an essential question: Why does this design matter?

Industrial design influences nearly every aspect of life, from the products we use to the systems that support our well-being. Yet the full power of design often goes unseen. The IDEA Impact Award exists to spotlight work that goes beyond aesthetics and functionality and drives meaningful change for people, communities, and the planet.

It recognizes projects that challenge assumptions, solve real societal challenges, shift perspectives, open new possibilities, or redefine what responsible and intentional design can be. Winning the Impact Award signals that a design did not just succeed commercially. It created value that cannot be measured only in metrics but must also be understood through human experience, equity, access, and long-term benefit.

This matters because design has the capacity to shape culture, transform industries, and improve lives. The Impact Award honors work that shows exactly how.

Entries for this add-on award will be evaluated independently from the other (regular) IDEA criteria (entry details section). The jury will only consider the response to the specific award question when scoring. This approach ensures that the award is judged solely on the merits of the submission related to its unique purpose.

The Impact Award honors work that shows exactly how. There is an additional $100 fee to add the Impact Award to your entry.
