Portrait of Tom Lockwood standing with arms folded in front of shelves of retro games and books.

Tom Lockwood is an independent game developer, artist and full-time dad based on Bunurong Country in Melbourne, Australia. Working under the name Gumpy Function, he creates original games for the Game Boy and Game Boy Color.

Tom’s work is defined by curiosity, humour and a commitment to exploring the absurd, the grotesque and the unexpected through play and imagery.

Tom was the game designer and artist behind the internationally recognised Grimace’s Birthday for Game Boy Color, and continues to push the creative limits of retro hardware through original, thought-provoking projects.

Beyond his own releases, Tom contributes articles and essays to GB Studio Central and created the Let’s Build a Platformer! GB Studio course, helping establish accessible learning pathways for beginner developers entering the GB Studio and retro-dev space.
