Green Schools Project transforms how schools respond to the climate crisis

We do this through the most comprehensive climate education programme in the country.

This is needed because 90% of young people are concerned about climate change, and over 90% of teachers want more taught about climate change in schools.

Through our programme (formerly known as Zero Carbon Schools), we enable children and young people to take action on climate change by designing and leading projects to reduce their schools’ carbon footprint.

We train teachers to deliver high-quality climate education and support schools to involve their communities in climate and sustainability.

Through our programme, we give teachers and pupils the tools they need to tackle the climate crisis at school, in their communities and throughout their lives.

Here’s how it works

Here’s what the schools, children
and young people we work with say

• Our generation should learn about climate change by doing projects like we did in Zero Carbon Schools because it is important. It
will help us all learn how to stop polluting and protect our oceans.
Year 5 pupil St Mary Magdalene and St Stephen’s Primary School
• We started a bike bus- inspired by Zero Carbon Schools. It has been very popular with 50+ riders each week and
has now become a permanent fixture every Monday.
Joe Wood Teacher at May Park Primary
• The support we had for the community outreach this year was really lovely and allowed us to ensure that community engagement could happen. It is helpful for the children to understand and see this project as a wider thing and it develops their leadership. They really enjoy those opportunities to showcase what they’ve learned.
Lucy Mellor Science lead at St Joachim’s Catholic Primary School in Newham
• Pupils have taken an active role in informing and inspiring their wider community, sharing their knowledge and encouraging others to adopt more sustainable practices.
Amrita Hassan Teacher at Keir Hardie Primary School in Newham
• Another way that we spread the message is telling everybody in our household, they then spread the message on to everybody else and then tell them to spread the message. So then this message sort of started off from being like 1% and then it grew bigger and bigger.
Year 5 pupil Star Primary in Newham
• It has led me to be a better person, an eco-friendly person… It’s amazing I do recommend.
Year 4 pupil St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School in Newham
• Zero Carbon Schools made me feel better and more important than I ever experienced.
Year 5 pupil George Tomlinson Primary School in Waltham Forest
• The programme has changed the way I travel to places, the way I eat and the way I live my general lifestyle.
Year 5 pupil Plymouth Grove Primary School in Manchester
• [Zero Carbon Schools] makes me feel like I have a responsibility like a teacher.
Year 4 pupil West Lodge Primary School in Harrow
• Because of the programme I changed my mind about the career I want.
Year 4 pupil St Luke’s CEVA Primary School in Newham

Here’s what our partners say about us

• The Zero Carbon Schools programme is vital in enabling more schools and young people in Manchester to access high-quality climate education and lead the way towards Manchester becoming carbon neutral by 2038. The programme also puts young people at the centre of projects, which aligns well with Manchester’s journey to becoming a Unicef Child-friendly city. We would encourage any Council or school nationwide to support Green Schools Project’s mission.
Rob Potter Project Manager, Environmental Climate Change, Manchester City Council
• Future Leap is so pleased to have Green Schools Project on board as our non-profit partner. Their dedication to embedding sustainability in education is vital in driving sustainability forward. By empowering students to take climate action, they’re creating a ripple effect of positive change that will shape a greener future for all of us.
Lauren Gillis Consultant and Business Network Manager, Future Leap Network
• We’re delighted to be partners of Green Schools Project, and supporting young people in Newham to gain a greater understanding of climate change whilst leading projects to reduce their schools’ carbon footprint. The Zero Carbon Schools programme is vital in enabling more schools and young people in Newham to access high-quality climate education and move towards Net Zero. We encourage any Council or school nationwide to support Green Schools Project’s mission.
Lily Mitrijevaite Newham Council, Environmental Control Officer
• Securing a sustainable future is one of the great challenges facing us and Green Schools Project is playing a vital role in ensuring that young people can be part of the solution. I strongly encourage other organisations to add their support.
